I'm a freshman and I didn't do too good in middle school. Well I pulled it all together at the end and promoted to high school. I'm so scared that I'm gonna fail. Everything is easier said than done. But seriously, I've been so stressed out because of math. Mainly math and biology. If you look at me, people think I'm an A+ student. My grades aren't THAT bad but still. I had A's in PE and health. And English and French I had B's. But math and biology I have D's. I'm barely pulling this off and if I don't get this together I'm so afraid. For one thing, I'm afraid of my future. That's what scares me. I don't think I'll be able to amount to anything. I have low self esteem but I don't really feel like getting into that. I would talk to my teachers and everything but its just so confusing. I'm in the basic math, algebra, and second semester is always harder. I have these headaches and I'm pretty sure its coming from stress at school. I think I'm overreacting but everybody in school talks about their future, what they want to be, college, ect. I have no idea whatsoever. I don't know if I can make it to college. That's what I'm scared of, if I don't go to a college that my life wouldn't be as good as it could be. I know I'm in 9th grade but I don't want to go to summer school. I would try tutors but I never have the time. I have issues at home and really wouldn't make it after school. My biology teacher is so confusing, even if it was one on one I couldn't get it. Please help, thanks. I'm stressing too much over this.

I'm 17 and a junior in high school. I wish when I was in 9th grade someone would have explained to me exactly how high school works. First things first, goals.
There are different kind of diplomas you can earn when you graduate. Each kind of diploma, however, has different qualifications. That is where goals come in. Sign up to talk to your counselor and ask him/her about the diplomas you can earn. Pick a diploma and work hard to earn it.
Once you know exactly what your working for, don't stop working! Your Freshman year is the easiest. Sophomore year, just about 85% of students go through what we call a "sophomore slump" In other words, you tend to slack off that year. DON'T be one of those students.
Junior year is when things get serious.
That's the year when you will start looking back on the previous years before. You'll either have 2 things in mind when you do think back. A) I'm proud of what I've done and I can't wait to get out and start my career! or B) I can kick myself in the butt for not doing my best. Then you'll worry about grades being good enough for college
ALWAYS work for the A's. ALWAYS. Never receive a progress report with C's and think eh, not the best, but that's ok.
Like I said, talk to your counselor about diplomas and such. KNOW what your working for!!! Make goals and work for them!!! That's the key. Don't wait till your junior year to start goals. It doesn't work that way because then it's too late.

But you need to take a deep breath, and do whatever you can do to get extra points on you grade. For example, maybe you could do some extra credit? My first advice to you, is to control what you can control. What I mean by that is to focus on things that you can have power over. When you get homework or Projects, its VERY important that you do alot of work on them, this way if you dont do as great on a test or quiz as you hoped, you will be able to back it up. Participate in class and ask lots of questions, I know you may think some questions are stupid, but the truth is, alot of times students in your class have the same questions, you are just the only one asking it. Teachers are there for you to ask questions, so dont hessitate.
Plan your schedule wisely. Yes you need to work hard, but everyone deserves a little break sometimes. Make sure to get in time with your friends and or family over the weekend, and dont feel bad if you watch a little tv. In fact, I honestly have a bio quiz tomorrow, and I really and truely dont understand what I am doing, but Im going to be calm, and do the best that I can. If you are still struggling, I suggest you ask your teacher for some extra help. You can also get an out of school tutor to help you.
You are only a freshman, dont worry about it right now, everyone told me that my freshman year was going to be the easiest and best, but its the complete opposite. My freshman year was terrible, I got two C's on my semester 1 grades, and two C's on my semester 2 grades. Sophomore year was much more stress free and I didnt get any C's. My GPA Semester 1 of Sophomore year was a 3.296 which is good.
Take a trip to your guidance counselor for some "guidance." They will be more than welcome to help you, and suggest things to help you make your life easier.
A tip for in class while you are learning I would say is definetly to repeat in your mind what your teacher says to see if you really understand it. For example, if your teacher says: Water is polar. Oil is polar too. Oil would desolve in water because "polar dessolves polar." <using bio terms for you :-) > repeat that to yourself, maybe asking in a question: "Why does oil dessolve in water? Because they are both polar, and polar dessolves polar." If you didnt understand what you repeated to yourself simply raise your hand and ask the teacher. I also find that my friends can explain to me what the teacher teaches better than the teacher does haha. If this is the case with you, dont hesitate to ask a peer for a little help, everyone needs assistance sometime! :-)
Good luck, and remember to just relax. If I can help you with anything else, let me know! you can always inbox me on my advice column, xosodapopx3 [ xosodapopx3's advice column | Ask xosodapopx3 A Question ]
MODERNDURATION answered Tuesday February 24 2009, 3:08 pm: What you need to do is take a breather, just stop and look at what you have accomplished. You made it to high school, that is awesome. Sure the future can be freaky because you dont know what to expect, but you made it so far already. Take a look at your past, the change for elementary to middle school im sure at the time that was scary because it was something unfamiliar to you but you did just fine with the transition. Remember you are not alone in this talk to other peers who are feeling the same way you are about the future, start checking out careers/colleges that interest you and see what kind of standards apply to be accepted. By looking and exploring options about your future it may help you settle a bit because you have an idea of what you want to accomplish instead of going out into the world with no clue. As for getting your grades up, i suggest if you can come in before school and get at least 15min of help a day and ask if there is any extra work you could be assigned to get your grades up, remember teachers acknowledge you more for your effort. As well take into consideration that colleges love to see improvement in your grades from freshmen-senior year so if you arent doing so hot right now honestly its not a big deal, as long as you can boost your grades in the math/science courses as you continue your journey through out high school. So relax, take a break and go out with some friends over the weekend, it might just be what you need and during the week just look into colleges/careers , study with some friends, make an effort to e-mail your teachers about not understanding something if you can't come in after school.
BUT biggest thing to remember is that your not alone in this, everyone and i mean everyone is thinking about the future at one point or another not only in high school but once you hit college and your career and so forth, its all how you handle it and by not letting it get to you so much by having some fun with friends to relax and investing in making a plan for the future for security may even help you perform better than you ever were before.
