Help Memorizing information?

Question Posted Tuesday January 27 2009, 3:34 am

So basically, I've been asked to study my Learner's book because i want to get my licence as soon as possible, but when it comes to studying Im not good at memorizing stuff unless Im really interested in it, and well, Information about giving way and whatnot just doesn't interest me and if i feel pressured to pass the test, I will have a panic attack pretty much. My mind tends to go off into another direction when im trying to focus reading so im veryy easily distracted. Does anyone know a special way to study and remember informationn?

It is hard to memorize stuff, that is boring.
One way to go about it is to read it over and over again.
For the driver's license you could memorize te signs by their pictures. Like try to associate a certain picture with an event relevant to your life.
For the information, pretend like you are reading Harry Potter or Twilight. D= Off coarse you are not, but just try to set the mood. And Also highlighting stuff can help you memorize stuff.
And relax, the drivers test (at least the one I took) was easy.

I am the same way with almost any textbook. the only way I know how to focus on what i am reading is to write it in an outline or to use key points as lyrics. You might also want to try to listen to music while you study or you could try having someone help you by quizing you on some major parts of the information. You shoul also try reading the first and last sentance of each paragraph, bold faced words, and if there are pictures or diagrams look over them. Hope I helped

A really simple trick is to set whatever you are studying to the tune of music. It's proven to work. It sounds quite elementary, but people naturally retain information better when in song form. This is why people can remember all sorts of song music, but can't remember anything for a history, or in this case, a driver's test ;)

I also could not retain information from reading the DMV book. The way I studied was much easier and I learned so much more through it.

You can go to the DMV website for your state, and they should have practice tests that are EXACTLY like the test you will have to take. They just switch around the questions. It's ten times easier to study when you know you are studying what you need, and nothing more.

=] Good luck on your test.

Have you tried a college success class? They really help with study tips and memorizing information. I know how you feel - If I'm not interested, there's no way I want to tune in. You just have to be confident in how far you've come and know that you only have a little bit left. Try your best as I'm sure you won't have to take this test again, or at least for a long time. Good Luck!

okay wow I can relate to this question so much! I completely understand, I got so scared for my drivers test that I cried for like 20 minutes! To help with my distractions, I limit myself to how much music I listen to before the test so that it doesnt get stuck in my head. Also, while your studying, you may think you are learning the information, but to know for sure, test yourself and cover all of your answers. If you dont know the answer, then look at the answer, and cover it up again and repeat the question and answer to yourself trust me it works! Another thing I do, is say when you want to go get a snack or watch tv. Set a goal for yourself, say to yourself that you cant watch tv until you study for this long, or until you know this many things. Try not to study on a couch or in bed, I do that alot haha and I ALWAYS fall asleep. Thats another problem, I tend to get bored. If you do too, just get up and take a stretch or something. That could also be a good time to quiz yourself. If you find that you are just reading things without actually listening to what you are reading, I will read it again (out loud but quietly) and then ask myself what I just read. If I know then I continue, if I dont then I read it over again and that will help you focus the next time around.
Good Luck!!! let me know how this goes for you! Im glad I found this question, I can relate to this so much! :-)

I use to have the same problem. So I got this book from the library (can't remember the name), but it was techniques on remembering for tests or whatever. And the one point that always helped me was to focus on a point and use the first letter of each word to form a funny sentence or phrase. For example, if the answer to a question is "Fasten your seat belt and turn on car," then I would make up something like "Fat yams sing beautifully at the online choir." Crazy, I know. But it worked for me.
So try it or maybe check out a book at the library.
Hope this helps.
