I have braces. And the first day I got them, my teeth were very sensitive and for the first week all I could eat was soup. :/
They weren't rubbing up against my lip, and nothing was poking me, so I didn't need the wax.
But you might need wax, so ask your orthodontist if he/she could give you some, or you could just go to a local drug store and buy some.
So have wax, soup (or any soft food), Tylenol, and any other things you think you'll need ready.
And also, every time I get the tightened it feels like (at least for me) the first week I got them on. :P
So maybe have soft foods at your house when you get them tightened.

Well are you getting a shot? I'll take it if your teeth are sensitive.. but seriously.. they just glue brackets on and push wires through it & hook it in the back [slips right in, you know].. It may feel uncomfortable because there's a wire surrounding your teeth and there's some pressure. They give you wax just in case the wire in the back pokes. After a few months, you'll get used to it and you could just ask them to cut the wires shorter in the back. Go out and buy a smoothie afterwards. Mine hurt because I had over 4 teeth removed.. but if you didn't then they shouldn't really hurt to be honest. You could always have ice cream or medicine.

Had eight years of braces, they really don't hurt all that bad.

Buy some wax (in dental section of drugstores, etc) in case they poke, and have advil and soft foods ready. (smoothies, applesauce, yogurt, soup, etc).

you should definitely take Advil or tylonal 10 minutes before you get them on. They'll hurt the first day, not just the second, and they may hurt for a few weeks.

make sure you get lots of food that dont require you to apply pressure to your teeth.

The most you can do is just deal with it.
and take something like Advil to ease the pain
