Alright, I'm well aware that teens go through different confusing stages. They're unsure of themselves, they get depressed..blah blah. But what if I actually thought I had some kind of mental disease? What if I read about it and found the symptoms to be true in my case.? Like..I've found myself to be bulimic, depressed, anxious..all those things. But how can I tell if it's true or not and not just one of those "teen" things. Because my mother won't even listen. She brushes it off and says its just another teen emotion and stage.
Any advicee? I'm 16/f by the way.

I was also anorexic so dont feel like your the only person with these problems and im also an emo cutter but my friends are trying to get me to stop. just ask your mom if you can have a minute to talk about your problems and ask her if she had any of these problems wen she was your age. maybe that will help you. Good Luck :) [ pirategirl123's advice column | Ask pirategirl123 A Question ]
thelaura answered Wednesday April 23 2008, 6:56 am: How do you know? - well, you should go to a doctor for an accurate diagnosis.
I can tell you, looking up symptoms online isn't an effective way to get a proper diagnosis - 99% of the time people are SO adamant they have something because the internet or the medical book said so - and it just turns out they're worrying over nothing.
If I were you, I'd go to the doctors about your bulimia, definitely. Whilst you're there, mention your other feelings and worries, It's what they're there for, but your depression and anxiety is really common amongst teens, so yes, perhaps they are just a phase. ellegirl606 answered Wednesday April 23 2008, 12:27 am: I felt that way too when I was that age. It's called teen angst lol and everyone goes through it. It seems like 90% of people on this site are on it lol.. When I studied specific mental and emotional disorders, you learn that almost everyone has symptoms of a certain illness, but that doesn't mean they have the disorder. Like, lots of people are afraid of germs, but they all aren't classified as having OCD.
***Things are only classified as disorders or problems when they affect your everyday life***
If it prevents you from everyday functioning (eating correctly, jeopardizing your health, work, school, not being able to leave the house) or to the point where it is seriously threatening your life, THEN it is considered a problem.
For example, like I said before, most people are afraid of germs. But with people who have OCD, their entire lives fall into ruins. they can't even leave the house and lose their jobs, or they wash their hands 200 times a day to the point where their skin is raw.
Anyways, I'm sorry your mom isn't being supportive. You should talk to someone you feel comfortable with, like a close friend, relative or counselor if you choose to. [ ellegirl606's advice column | Ask ellegirl606 A Question ]
CHECKERED-LOVE answered Tuesday April 22 2008, 9:24 pm: It's kind of impossible to know right now if it's just a teen thing. I think once you get into adulthood and look back, you can discover whether this was a mental disease or just a phase.
However, you still need to see a doctor about those symptoms. They are still medical and need attention. If you can't get to a doctor, go to the school nurse .
CaliforniaLover1111 answered Tuesday April 22 2008, 9:24 pm: yeah you should seek out professional help but that is expensinve...i would start with going to a counselor...like do you have a school counselor you could go to? they can kind of get an idea of if this is just a stage or if you really need to get help and then they will help you figure out how to see a professional and all that stuff...but if you cant go to a counselor then definitely go to the doctors...and well if neither of those is an option then is there a close friend or relative you could go to to talk about this with? Bunnunnah answered Tuesday April 22 2008, 9:06 pm: Go to a doctor and tell them about it and they will do whatever they need to and tell you if it is really an illness or a "stage". If your mom is in denial then she probebly wont take you. Try calling in an appointment and going yourself or have someone else take you. [ Bunnunnah's advice column | Ask Bunnunnah A Question ]
