Question Posted Monday April 21 2008, 3:33 pm

Say someone confessed to another person that they accidently killed someone 7 years ago and then covered it up so it looked accidental. Is there a way in the court of law that could prove the crime? without actual proof, just confession to one person?

The truth comes out eventually...This is simply a matter of fighting the truth or submitting to it. Fighting is sometimes more exhausting and robbing of your life and freedom, then owning up to your actual mistake. Encourage your friend to find peace in the truth, before it catches up with him. Better to control the confession and get mercy, than be discovered still covering it up and be judged. A heavy guilty heart is its own prison. There is freedom in the truth.

If a body is found or they have a good
reason to exhume an already buried body
they could. With the tests they have today
they have have solved many really old
crimes by looking at the corpse.

The chances of proving the crime are very low. They can't base it on one confession alone without concrete evidence. Like another person said before me, people sometimes own up to crimes but don't get locked away because it can't be proved. I've seen this a lot with hit-and-runs. Look at the singer Brandi, she confessed that she hit a man with her car over a year ago, but they couldn't prove it so she basically got nothing. In your question, 7 years is a long time, too. Plus, in the court of law, a person is innocent until proven guilty.

No. Even if someone begs to the police that they did it and should be locked up, there needs to be further proof. However, you don't need much proof after a confession.

maybe if you confess to someone, and they go to the police, they can set you up by having the person you confess to call you , email, etc and talk about it and show police. but..this question does get me curious. if there is anything you need to get off your chest, you should do the right thing.
