Gardasil

Question Posted Sunday April 6 2008, 6:51 pm

so last month i got my first gardasil shot. the doctor recomended it but my mom was kinda on edge to decide weather i should get it or not. i got it but my mom seems to think that there can be negative side affects. like that there is side effects more severe then it said on the paper. and some of them may not come right away at all.. it may be a few weeks or months. she says it hasnt been out for to long and that it is new so i could be bad.. but i dont know. she says she has heard negative things.

has anyone heard anything really bad about this shot? not like the common side effects that i read on the paper but ones that are more brushed under the covers and not mentioned. any that could be a huge danger to my health.

15/f

so here is the thing i got the shots and the first one i had no problem. i went for my second one and the next day i woke up and went to school and all was fine. through out my day at school i started to feel really light headed and felt like i was going to pass out. after about an hour of sitting in the nurse's office moving around with a tingly body, dry mouth, and feeling faint it went away. i went home with the worst headache of my life. i didn't think it had anything to do with the shot at the time because i had gotten really bad headaches before. so i thought that all of my symptoms. after receving my third shot that day i was out with some friends and started to feel really hot and faint. i called my mom and she brought me home to get some food, because i thought it had to do with not eating much that day. i tried to eat and couldn't i my whole body started to feel numb and i was shaking a lot. i went to the hospital and after about an hour of being hot, dry mouth, shaking, high heart rate, and feeling faint i felt like i couldn't breathe. they rushed me into a room and started looking me over. laying down your heart rate is only post to be 60 well i was laying down for about twenty minutes and my heart rate was 140. i thought i was going to die that night and so did my mother, and the docters. i had to look my mom in the eye that night and tell her that i loved her and that i was sorry for everything i put her through in my short life, because i thought it was going to be the last time i would be able to say it. that is the worst feeling in the world. they are positive that it was caused by the shot i had eariler that day. to this day i still suffer with hot flashes and bad headaches. i worry about being sick all the time.

DO NOT GET THE SHOT.
it had effected my life in so many ways that i can't explain.
they also have proff that the shot doesn't even work.
so i risked my life and suffer from something that is not even worth it.

I am a male and ovarean cancer runs in my family, and my mom is going to get my sister one once she is old enough. I personally think it is a good thing, because the "FDA" wouldn't allow it to be given if it was deadly. And if it helps or can I help, why not get a shot instead of removing your ovaries and never have a chance to have kids.

Believe it or not, the Gardasil shot is not all it's cracked up to be. There are serious reported cases of things like seizures, blood clots, and even possible deaths. Now, no vaccination tends to be 100% effective but we're not really sure what this vaccine will do entirely for many years to come.

Here is a link in which a woman reports the death of her daughter possibly being linked to the Gardasil shots:

[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

Here is a link in which a person has gathered side-effects from various women that had the shot. The person has made a table of them (which is sort-of small but readable):

[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

...That includes things like seizures, death, and severe headaches/pain.

This site:

[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

...also said:

"Side effects published by Merck & Co. warn the public about potential pain, fever, nausea, dizziness and itching after receiving the vaccine. Indeed, 77% of the adverse reactions reported are typical side effects to vaccinations. But other more serious side effects reported include paralysis, Bells Palsy, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, and seizures."

Here is also another site that informs others how serious the side-effects can be:

[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

This also has some things to say about the Gardasil vaccine:

[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

I did read that Merck (the makers of Gardasil) did add to the side effects list: Bells Palsy, paralysis, seizures, and Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Those are all very serious conditions to be developing after a vaccine used to help prevent only four types of HPV.

The four strains of HPV it helps prevent are numbers 16, 18, 6, and 11. There are more than 100 strains of HPV though. Strains 16 and 18 cause cervical cancer and 6 and 11 cause genital warts; however, there are many other strains that cause the same thing and that are transmitted the same way. EDIT TO ADD IN: Gardasil does NOT prevent ovarian cancer and has nothing to do with the prevention of such cancer.

Genital cancers are caused by HPV strain numbers 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51. Genital warts are caused by 6, 11, 42, 43, 44, 55 and some others I'm not sure of. Other different strains of HPV are also responsible for warts on the hands and feet, a scaly skin disease, and even an oral infection that causes masses on oral mucus membranes.

I also want to point out that as I was searching for links to post here for you to check out, I saw a lot of lawsuit websites where some people are taking legal action to sue Merck for the severe side-effects they experienced. I'm not sure if they have a true lawsuit yet or if they're just claims so far.

Like I said, no vaccination tends to be 100% safe. It's up to you to decide if you want to risk the possible very-harmful side effects that could come along with it. For me, I'd like to give it a few years before even thinking of possibility getting the shot.

The vaccine is so new for all we know it makes women infertile (a major fear of mine which is why I refuse to get the vaccination). We won't be sure what exactly it MAY do to our bodies until quite a few years down the road. I know that in pregnant women it causes miscarriages and major birth defects but it's still early to really find out if it causes anything in women who get pregnant AFTER receiving the shot.

I hope you find the things you're looking for and I hope I've helped your search a little.

Well, I'm sure the positives out way the negatives on this one.

But I can understand why your mom is concerned, a lot times when the FDA approves a new medication (or vaccine) and puts it on the market, a few years later they discover some nasty side effects that don't show up until years later.

A good example would be the Norplant that was introduced many years ago. The birth control was inserted in your arm, it contained silicone and made a lot of people sick..same with silicone breast implants, a lot of people have become deformed because of that. Very saddening. And that diet pill that was such a rage awhile ago..ended up causing many heart problems.

But, in this case, as I said, It's my opinion that the benefits out way the consequences. (no silicone here fortunately) Cancer is a terrible, terrible disease that I wouldn't cast on my worst enemy! All in all, you really won't know until some years from now- and if you get some negative side effects that aren't listed..you can always join a class action suit. Although most of those don't receive much money in the end...*sigh*

I truly don't mean to scare you. Actually, most all medications turn out JUST FINE: I only want you to be informed as much as possible! *and understand why your mom is so concerned*- knowledge is power!

Blessings!
Jasmine

Razhie answered Sunday April 6 2008, 9:03 pm:
There is no huge danger to your health. If there was a huge danger, it wouldn't be legal. It IS legal, it's just new-ish. It's been in development since the 1980s... so it's not like they rushed it through and didn't check it out throughly first. It WAS fast-tracked through the FDA due to a sense of urgency at the number of HPV infections.

Frankly, I'm not sure where your mother heard she should be worried. I have heard doctors question the effectiveness of Gardasil, but nothing else recently.

Anyways, these are serious side-affects were seen in far less then 1% of women who got the shot (when side-effects present in less then 1% of people there is no way to even be certain it's the shot that caused them!)

One: Asthma - This is an allergic reaction, and would have happened quite quickly if it was going too.

Two: Vommiting and Diarrhea - it's a gastro problem and can be treated easily with antibotics.

Three - Pelvic inflammatory disease - This is a bit like a yeast infection and is also an STI, and it is pretty much painless. It is also simple to treat with antibiotics but this small risk of it is is just one more reason you SHOULD GO TO THE GYNO FOR A YEARLY CHECK UP. Vacine or no, you should be doing that anyways.

Seriously, it is safer then a lot of the other vaccines you were given as a infant.

Here are the side-effects as listed on the Gardasil website:
[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
And the FAQ from the FDA (read 15)
[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

EDIT:
I want to address two of Peeps points, although she is most certainly right that in the end, you have to research for yourself and make the decision.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the FDA concluded in late 2007 that none of the 3 reported deaths in the US after taking Gradsil appeared to be conected to the drug in any way.
The European Medicines Agency investigated two deaths as well, and found no connection to the vaccine.

It is very true that Gradsil has been connected to abortions, however, it was NEVER tested or approved for use in pregnant women. They shouldn't have been given the shot in the first place.

It is VERY, very, important to check the DATE and SOURCE of information online. Remember: The bad stuff ALWAYS gets more play. Look for reputable websites and the most current information.

LM answered Sunday April 6 2008, 8:39 pm:
No. If the vaccine wasn't safe it wouldn't have been released. It's virtually impossible that any side effect you could experience would be worse than getting HPV or cervical cancer. Don't worry about it =]

I did some Google searches and when I did find something terrifying/strange/just plain weird, it was a very small number [as in one in a group of thousands] and since it's so small... it's doubtful that it was the vaccine that did it.

Since you got the shot already and nothing too bad has shown up, you're fine.
