Little do THEY know

Question Posted Wednesday December 12 2007, 7:56 pm

People laugh in my face when i say that being a kid isnt as easy as you think it is. Yes theyre the ones with all the bills and taxes, but we have to deal with all of their problems: for example devorce. Grades. Gossip. Teachers. Caring if what your wearing out of the house one day will make you cool. I know they were one kids themselves too, but they weren't kids in the 21st century. I mean, if you dont have the right phone, you not consisdered cool. I just need to know people have my back on this. We have to deal with everything they throw on us. They take advantage of the fact that they do everything, like "I worked my tail off" then when i say "So did i" they laugh in my face. being a kid (im 14) isnt that easy!!!!
I just need to know someone has my back on this
xoxo

I'm sorry, but a 14 year old's problems AREN'T on the same level as adults. It may seem like it because you're immature still, but seriously, think about it. "OMG I can't believe Mandy and Justin are together," is not as bad as, "Holy shit, I have to pay rent." Yes, things like divorce are still bad for kids, but imagine what the parents are going through. And teachers? Oh well, your teacher gets mad at you because you're too busy talking during the lecture, and suddenly your life is shit? No! What about bosses, and if you screw up there you could lose your job, which gets you money. So good, I hope people laugh in your face for saying it's not easy being a kid....because it is. It so is.

This might seem like I'm not making sense, but stick with me. Okay, let's say you decide to start skateboarding. And one day you crash and break your wrist. And it hurts like heck! It's the worst pain you've ever felt and you can hardly bear it. But you get better and keep skateboarding. And then one day you have another crash and break both legs - compound fractures with the bones sticking out and everything. And that REALLY hurts like heck and you're thinking you might not survive it. And you look back and realize that this hurts a lot more than the broken wrist did. But that doesn't mean the broken wrist didn't hurt a lot! At the time, it was the worst thing that had ever happened to you.

I think that's where adults are coming from when they say, "Your problems are nothing compared to mine!" They're comparing "I might get teased because my cell phone is lame" with "I might lose my job and not be able to support my family." And yes, when you compare the two, you have to admit that supporting a family IS a bigger deal than having a cool phone. But adults seem to forget that for YOU, being considered cool is a huge, important issue; and being teased might be the most painful, traumatic thing you've ever gone through.

So yeah, I have your back on this. I think it's it's wrong of adults to write off kids' problems as silly or unimportant. Because even though the problems of adulthood are more "serious" than the ones you have at 14, it doesn't mean your problems are any less stressful to YOU. It would be like saying, "Don't whine about a broken wrist, because some day you'll break both legs and that will hurt more." Would that make the wrist feel any better? Of course not! But at the same time, YOU shouldn't deny that the "two broken legs" pretty dang painful as well!

I feel like the hardest part of being a kid is school. I mean it should be the most important thing anyway because education matters most.

I'm 19 now, and this is my second year living alone. I am halfway to the grownup point. And, I don't want to get there yet. I mean, I do want to finish school because it is stressful and I want to have a job because I feel like it's better than worrying about tests. But paying for my own cell phone bill, filing taxes or anything like that I am not looking forward to.

I can see how kids have it hard. But I think a lot of the stuff you think are difficult, you will realize when you are older was not worth stressing over. Like having the latest cell phone may make you cool, but if people are going to be friends with you because of that or because of what you wear, then it's not worth to have those people in your life.

I think life does get harder when you get older. When you start having a family, you can't just worry about you anymore, you have to worry about your kids. You work and have tasks then come home and have more to do.

I think being a kid is tough is dependant on how many responsibilities you actually have when you are a kid. Even then, they are adult responsibilities ( having a job, taking care of siblings, paying for bills, etc.)

Hun, They DID work thier tales off.

It's not the same, granted, but it was hard and it is hard. The universe is always coming up with new sorts of ways to make life, at any age, hard.

Go ahead and call people on it if they are belittling you, but don't chalk up to agaism what is simply poor communication.

I am 22, so I wasn't a teen all that long ago, and yeah it was tough, friends, school, mental health, pressures from everyone and everywhere. In unversity, and now in the work force, it hasn't gotten any easier. Not a tiny bit. I've gotten better at handling the stresses and the issues, but they haven't gotten simplier.

Perhaps instead of getting your panties in a knot because some people phrase things poorly you try make something good out of thier bragging and say "How did you manage it then?"

Because that is what being a young adult is really about, it's not about it being an easy or hard time of life, it's about learning how to live.
