Question Posted Thursday November 15 2007, 4:04 am
So my boyfriend was hitting my face with a shoe [sparring gear] He didn't realize it was hurting me. He didn't stop after I gave him a look to. So when he stopped a few seconds later, he did it again so out of nowhere, I slapped him. He got really upset and later said it was disrespectful. I don't know what to do! He didn't even think about what he was doing to me. I know what I did was wrong, i quickly realized that. I did something before thinking but it wasn't a hard slap. What am i supposed to say or do? he's completely pouring this out on me. i just want it to stop.

Tell him he was hurting you even though you know he didn't mean to. This isn't all your fault - if someone did that to me I would have the same reaction, BUT I wouldn't "give him a look" to stop. It must have been very unclear to him and he obviously can't have seen it as a "stop". Tell him you should have made it more clear and you are sorry for that. Hopefully he has already apologized for agitating you so much you had to slap him.
Just have a little chat just explaining the reasons for your actions. Don't blame each other because it will just make you have arguments. Things should be okay soon, so try not to worry. and make it clear it won't happen again! :)
Best of luck. [ thelaura's advice column | Ask thelaura A Question ]

Clearly, you are not in a healthy relationship with this guy because that's just not how couples (or even friends) treat eachother. Infact, it's horrible to hear that someone could do something like that to someone they supposedly care about. You did nothing wrong. Yes, any physical abuse to one another is wrong. But don't let him turn this around & make it all about you. If hitting someone in the face with a shoe isn't disrespectful to him, then it's obvious he has some issues decyfering what's right & wrong. You just can't continue being in a relationship with someone who does these things (especially without a reason. Even if there was some reason, it still doesn't make it right.) If you stay with someone who is emotionally or physically abusive, you're give them more power each day. You need to end things now before things become more serious. Razhie answered Friday November 16 2007, 7:39 pm: Apologize for slapping him, but inform him that your real mistake was not just telling him flat out that he was being a jerk.
Promise to use language next time he annoys you, not just nasty looks and ask him to put this behind you both.
LOL_x0x answered Friday November 16 2007, 5:42 pm: He hit you with a shoe?
Now to be rude or anything, but that's ridiculous. If my boyfriend, or anybody in general, hit me with a shoe and hurt me, I'd be a bit angry.
He's wrong for pouring this out on you for a few reasons:
A. He hit you first.
B. He wasn't getting the message to stop, therefore you had to act accordingly.
C. You didn't hit him hard and he hurt you worse.
D. He shouldn't be hitting you in the first place!
I would explain to him all of the above things, and apologize for hitting him. Then I'd nicely ask him not to hit you with shoes anymore, because then you won't have to slap him to get him to stop =]

mariahwannabe answered Friday November 16 2007, 4:28 pm: now if i was in a relationship I'd say that him doing that to you was wrong. A boy should NEVER EVER hit you.....never in a million years and he was wrong to do that you, especially when you made it clear that it hurt and you wanted it to stop. Even if you did something bad, it isnt his job to "tell you off" and he shouldnt even be touching you. If i was you, I wouldnt go out with him. He has hurt and abused you, and what about if he does it again, he'll think he will be allowed to do so if you take him back. He'll think it will be ok. You have seen the mean, bully and nasty side to him now as well and whats to say he wont do it again, especially when he is angry. You were right to slap him, it was the only way to make him relise what he had done, you may not of thought about what you were doing but he had plenty of time, especially after he stopped and then hit you again. If you like someone you dont hurt them and pick on them. I don't think he has real feelings for you because if he did he wouldn't do such a stupid thing even when you have him a look. I'd dump him and hell no is "talking" going to work....like he will listen to you if your being slapped on the face with a shoe. And no way should he dare say to you slapping his face was diresepctful when he was the
one hitting you with a shoe...maybe if it's a religion then yes but you have human rights. Stand up tall and straight with confidence and think about what he did to you and with that i would tell him you dont want to see him anymore. I mean yes you could give him another chance, but thats just wasting your time because he will think he has gotten away with it and that he can do it again. Get a friend to support you if you wish too, and see if they can boost the confidence. It rare for someone to change from evil to good. If you tell him its over he may grovel for you back DON'T give in, remind yourself of the cruelty you felt , but he may not care at all which shows that he dosn't care about you...even if he does grovel he shouldn't of hurt you in the first place. Remember you wear the pants in the relationship, not him.... [ mariahwannabe's advice column | Ask mariahwannabe A Question ]
