Babysitting Rate Too High?

Question Posted Monday November 12 2007, 5:15 pm

I am a 16 year old girl who has taken a babysitting course a few years ago and is certified in CPR. I don't have a lot of experience. I have only babysitted once before, not counting my younger sister. I babysat for a family that had a two year old and a ten year old.

Now I am babysitting for a family that has three kids: A three year old, and two 18 month olds. I only babysit for an hour or so, and the 18 month olds are napping, so unless they wake up, the only major responsiblility is the three-year-old.

My question is, is $10.00 an hour too much? I didn't ask for that much, the parents just gave it to me. I feel bad accepting it because even though I don't just watch TV when I'm babysitting, I play with the kids, it seems like a lot. But then again, I don't know much about babysitting rates, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would charge more.

They obviously think you deserve it.

Hello! Well, your question is a similar question that I had myself a couple of months ago. Look at it this way, I think that you should take in a couple of factors when deciding a rate: how many children, how long you watched them, what you did while watching them, etc.

Maybe you should talk to each individual customer and come up with a rate that suits you both.

hope that answers your question!

$10.00 is fine. I make $8 an hour, but I only babysit two kids. Most people I know make between $7 to $10.

Miya's figures are idiotic. 25 dollars an hour? She's not a freaking lawyer, she's babysitting for God's sake.

10 dollars is probably fine.

"Is your babysitter aged 15 or 16? Most likely, your teenage babysitter has some planned uses for cash, and at this age, is more apt to find jobs, so your pay may need to increase. A general guideline is to pay $5-$6 per hour, or a rate that matches what employers pay teens of this same age group. Again, the expectation is that the babysitter will remain at home with your child(ren) and not be expected to do much more than watch kids safely, prepare basic meals, and clean up after themselves. Some babysitters this age may help tutor kids or help them practice their dance steps. Some teens this age may command a higher rate of pay if they are able to drive themselves to your house and home afterward."

The majority of the sites I Googled for you say pretty much the same.

but you shouldn't feel bad for taking it. If it wasn't okay, they wouldn't give you that much in the first place. Or if you're a regular babysitter for this family and you really don't want to be taking that much, make up a new pay rate and tell them about it.

its a good price but they should give you 25 dollars for babysitting them for a hour. 10 dollars just isnt much because baby sitting is a huge responsibility
