Feeling run down

Question Posted Wednesday October 31 2007, 3:44 am

I feel so lethargic lately.
So badly it's almost taking over my life.
I'm 17/f.
I wake up to go to school in the morning and I can hardly get out of bed. My eyelids feel so heavy. I feel irritable and grumpy all day.
I don't really eat at school or drink much.
I am a vegetarian because meat makes me sick. I have been vegetarian for about 4 years now. I don't eat a special diet or anything, just evereything apart from meat.
I don't like those beans and lenitls things.
Every morning I have a vitamin/mineral tablet (called Supradyn) and an Iron tablet (24mg).
What am I supposed to do?
I came home from school crying from exhaustion today coz I couldn't get a lift from my mum so I had to walk.
Is it what I'm eating or what??
Someone help.

it really just sounds like your not getting enough sleep. make sure you go to bed at a decent hour so you can wake up easier. and naps arent always the best thing. you also should try to be more active. join a sport, go out with friends, or just exercise. it will make you feel healthier and itll give you more energy - guaranteed.

I hope you eat some form of protein because it should be a part of your diet. If you don't like beans, try tofu and nuts. Also, I hope you aren't eating less than usual, especially since if you'ra diet on fruits and veggies you need to eat a whole lot because they do not contain a lot of calories you need to use for energy. You say you don't really eat at school or drink much, which sounds problematic. If you don't like what you eat in school, pack a lunch. Drink liquids. That may also be a factor in why you are always so tired. Dehydration can do that to you: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) You need to eat and drink. How else can you carry out your day-to-day activities? It sounds like a problem not of what you eat, but how much you're getting into your system. Good that you're eating supplements, but you need actual food too.

This is really something you should go to your doctor about.

Maybe you have chronic fatigue syndrome: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

Are you sure there's nothing else in your life that is going on? Maybe you're exercising too much or not enough? Or stress? You're sick or you had a change in your life that is taking a toll on you? Personal issues? Something on your mind? You're depressed? Not getting enough sleep or good sleep?

One more thing, it is good to have mini-snacks/meals and power naps throughout the day.

It could be your appetite... maybe you're eating too much? or too little? Do you eat breakfast? its the most important meal of the day. You know why? because without it, you won't have any energy throughout the day. (sound familiar???) even if you do eat breakfast, try to get some minerals and vitamins in you. Make cearl with strawberries... thats what i sometimes have. Or maybe pancakes and kiwi, or watermelon... or French toast?? Does your school serve you lunch? If you have a lame excuse like- the food there is disgusting.. then have you thought about bringing your own lunch?? Thats what a lot of teenagers do in my high school.

If not your appetite, then maybe you're getting too little sleep, or too much? try to aim for at least 8 and a half hours. I get around 7 hours because i'm always so busy, so I'm trying hard everyday to get at least a little bit more sleep. Have you considered trying to set your alarm clock about 15 minutes earlier than usual?? I am supposed to wake up at 6:30 every morning, and if I set it then, I wake up at 6:45... but now I set my alarm to 6:15 and I wake up on time. Or maybe you can set your clock ahead of time, so it would say its 6:30, but in reality it would be 6:15. got it? so you're ahead of time by 15 minutes. (or however much time you want)

Maybe you can try doing this, when you get home from school... take about 20 minutes off during homework breaks and stretch, go outside... bike around or stay in the house and work out (push ups, sit ups etc.) to get some blood flowing around you and then when you get back to doing homework, you'll see how much more you'll know. So try exercising more.

If none of those things... then I suggest seeing a doctor because I don't know what it could be. Maybe mono???? Last year, I felt just like you (tired all the time, grumpy etc.) and my dad took me to the doctor and they tested me for mono and it was negative. So I had it for about 1-2 months and I couldn't play volleyball during that time. it was the most depressing 1-2 months so far because I couldn't play volleyball, I had to take things easy (no screaming, or energetic things) some days I had to miss school because it was that bad, lots of homework etc.

I hope you feel better!
=D

It could be a number of things.
What you're eating is a start, yes. You need more supplements if you don't eat meat. Make sure you get other vits and nutrients from vegetables and salads.
Do you sleep too little? If so, get into the habit of sleeping more. You could even be sleeping too much. If that's the case, tone it down. Get about 9 hours a night.
I cannot stress this enough, but eat a GOOD breakfast when you wake up, like porridge for example. It will keep you going throughout the day.
Eat and drink at school. Healthy snacks to keep you going. Sip water throughout the whole day to keep you hydrated.
Keep active too. Don't sit around all day. It just makes you feel sluggish.
You may even have something like anemia, so it's worth a trip to your doctor to rule out any illnesses etc.
I know feeling lethargic isn't fun. I used to be like it when I had school, too.
