im 16 and have never touched seafood.. mainly because were not sure if im allergic my mom is allergic and so is my grandpa.. but my dad isnt and he lovessss it. well yeah ive never tried it because im afraid of the consequences but also when i was little it didnt look appealing to me to eat.. now that im 16 it loooks sooo good and my mouth waters watching everyone around me eating it. I really want to try it.. My mom called the doctor and they said the only way to find out if im allergic is to try it and wait to see any results. Is that really the only way to find out? what if i am allergic and i eat it>???

Maybe give some free advice about: Cooking? brie answered Wednesday September 12 2007, 7:23 am: try a little not alot, if you feel ill you are probably allergic, i also found out if you generally dont like certain foods thats your bodys way of saying your having a bad reaction, have someone with you when you try it, i am allergic to real crab, so i get the fake, my mom cant eat shrimp but i can, lobster tastes great to my mom and my sister it tastes like burnt tires to me, only try one kind at a time, that way you will know what your allergic to. an allergy doctor can test you with a little needle in the arm for food allergies it really doesnt hurt, they mark dots on your arm in ink then stick you, wait about 30-60 min. then check for swelling and itching. good luck BRIE [ brie's advice column | Ask brie A Question ]
Sabine answered Tuesday July 31 2007, 11:32 pm: Well, since an allergy is your body's reaction against something it has previously recognized as a hazard, there is no way that someone who has never had seafood can be allergic to it. Likely the first time you try it you will be fine. It's the second and every time after that you should worry about. Does your mom have an epipen? As the previous adviser said, those are life-savers. At the very least, you should have Benadryl (syrup works faster) around if you want to try seafood.
It's up to you to decide whether it's worth the risk. Allergies, by the way, are not inherited. They come from your body's memory of something identified as a threat. So just because your grandfather has allergy to seafood does not mean that anyone else in your family would. Your mother may. You probably do not. But the only way to know is to try it. Try just a tiny bit if you want. Make sure you're not too far from medical care if something should happen. Same goes for the 2nd and 3rd times you try it.

What they do is give you tiny samples of different foods onto your back (or arm I've heard) and you are allergic to a substance if your skin gets irritated in that area. If you do decide to try it, and you react, it can be a very scary thing. Benodryl always helps me when I am getting a slight reaction (I am allergic to tree nuts), but an epipen is what you really need. You inject it into your thigh, and it saves lives. I'm not going to tell you not to try it because that is your decision, but I'll tell you my experience. When I ate a pecan for the first time, the reaction was only minimal, and it allowed me knowledge that I probably would not have obtained otherwise. There was only a small pecan in the cookie, but if I had eaten a whole pecan not knowing, it could have been bad.
