Each course is usually worth 3 credits, if you pass the course you get the three credits, BUT whether or not you got a A in the class or a C will determine what your Grade Point Average is.
An A is worth 4 in grade point average and a B is worth 3 and a C is worth 2, etc. etc.
I think the average and it is also acceptable to have a 2.5 or better. Anything over three is excellent. and if you have a 4.0 grade point average, that means you have received a perfect A in each of your classes.

Like, your GPA for the year, they'd calculate by adding together all the grades for all your classes, then dividing by the number of classes. A lot of higher-level classes are graded at different weights- an honors history class, for example, may add 10 points to your final average for the purpose of calculating your GPA.
