I have to disagree with people who say that marijuana is not addictive. It is addictive, because addiction is a psychological response, not just a physiologic response- hence why you can have an addiction to gambling, high risk behavior, sex, working, anything.
The compound in marijuana that gives a person the "high" feeling known at THC, stimulates cannaboid receptors in the brain- so there are studies out there showing that a person can have a physiologic addiction to it- although not as well studied as alcohol.
Sorry, that I had to go into that tangent, but I sometimes get frustrated with people who don't differentiate betwen addiction and dependency (ie the physiologic need for a drug).
You may or may not get addicted the first time you try cigarettes or marijuana. It all depends on how an individual responds to the drug and their behaviors around it. I have smoked ciggarettes, cigars, and marijuana, but not habitually, because my brain/body does not get addicted to drugs or the feelings that the drugs give. Generally, your body will not desire that drug after one time, but if you do start regularly, you may develop a tolerance to it, and when you try to quit- your body will react to get that drug back to feel "normal"
Sorry this is a lot longer but think of it this way.
Your body/brain is sitting on level "0"-- you smoke whatever, and your body/ brain goes to +5- when your body develops a tolerance to it- you would have to smoke more to get it to that +5 level. When you stop though- your level plummits to say -5. You will then feel that you need the drug to just get back to level "0", and more to go beyond that. This is basically the reason why it is so hard "physiologically" to get off drugs.
I'm not adverse to experimentation, but I would think hard about developing the habit.
TheWallflower answered Thursday May 31 2007, 9:55 pm: marijuana isn't addictive. Those who claim to be addictive lack proper self discpline and are mentally addicted.(the way someone would be addicted to a video game).
Cigarettes vary from different people. Whoever said it takes one or two to get addicted is wrong. I would say the average is about a week of casual smoking everyday. By the way, addiction is easier to break as soon as you get addicted. The more you do it while you're addicted makes it harder for you to break the habit later. So lets say you get addicted after a week of smoking, quitting shouldn't be that difficult for you. I still really, really, don't recommend smoking cigarettes casually for a whole week though. LoveNJstyle answered Thursday May 31 2007, 6:41 pm: ciggs... from hardcore smokers i know... it took like one or two to get addicted.
weed... i know everyone says yeah you get addicted after one and become a pothead blah blah - not so. anyone that says that can fight me about it. yes, some people do get urges and feel the need to be happy and stuff but its nothing like a cigg addiction because its not an addiction at all. <3 [ LoveNJstyle's advice column | Ask LoveNJstyle A Question ]
theymos answered Thursday May 31 2007, 5:36 pm: Marijuana isn't addictive at all, so you'll never get addicted to it. Some people will feel the urge to use cigarettes after the first time, but the urge isn't as strong as it would be after smoking for a long time. [ theymos's advice column | Ask theymos A Question ]
uisforukelele answered Thursday May 31 2007, 5:33 pm: i've heard of people getting addicted the first time. they try it once and say, "i'm never going to do this again, it's a one time thing" and then a few weeks later they're trying cigarettes or weed again. and then it just doesn't stop from there. the thinking there is "if i only smoke one more, it can't hurt me" but then they get addicted, some without even realizing it. i think cigarettes are easier to get addicted to. i've never tried cigarettes or weed, but there are more people out there who get addicted to smoking cigarettes the first time than people who smoke weed once and get addicted. i've heard of people trying weed and just quitting after that. the best thing to do is just not try it because if you get addicted, it's a hard/nasty habit to break. leLovely answered Thursday May 31 2007, 5:32 pm: You CAN get addicted for the first time, it's not like you will/will not for sure.
If you do it more than once, yes you have a higher chance of getting addicted. [ leLovely's advice column | Ask leLovely A Question ]
Andreaaaa answered Thursday May 31 2007, 5:25 pm: Chances are very slim that you'll get addicted the first time BUT if you do it every once in a while, you will eventually get addicted. Why stop a bad habit that your gonna wanna break when your older? [ Andreaaaa's advice column | Ask Andreaaaa A Question ]
