what is the point of poking someone on facebook?

It seems that a lot of people don't know what poking actually is. Yes, it is used as flirting or a little affection thing between friends, but it actually DOES do something.

If you poke someone, you are given access to their profile (and vise versa) for 48 hours. It's something you can do before you add someone to see if they're interesting/cool enough or whatever.

It's hardly ever used for that reason, but that's what it was made to do.
