Can't swallow pills!

Question Posted Saturday May 19 2007, 2:04 pm

I'm 15 years old and I can't swallow pills. :(
I can swallow pasta whole and recently I swallowed a vitamin that was coated in something that made it slippery so it was easier to swallow but not everything comes like that, of course. And I don't remember how I did that. It's really annoying because I just got these pills but I CANNOT swallow them. I've practiced with tic tacs but even they don't go down. I try putting it in my mouth then gulping water and tilting my head back but it doesn't work. What's wrong with meee?!

I had/have the same problem. Before I would throw up everytime i tried swallowing pills. I have to get multiple glasses of water just to swallow one. Try taking the pill, and putting it as far back as you can in your mouth. Then swallow some water. Or you know how you can do a hard gulp, like where you can actually hear it. Well do that with the pill and water.. it should definitely go down.

i definitely feel your pain. i couldn't swallow pills for the longest time! but, here's what i do... first of all, i relax my tongue in my mouth. then i put the pill on the very back of my tongue. then i take a medium gulp of water, throw my head back and sit there until i can swallow it. some people just can't swallow pills, but i promise that you can learn. but, if you can't swallow them, you can always crush the pills up and just eat them (gross, i know) or mix them into something. like you could mix them into a coke or something, or maybe yogurt or apple sauce.

First you need to realize that it's okay that you aren't able to swallow pills yet, relax. This is a very common problem. I am 16 years old and some of my friends are in the same predicament.

I think that you should relax when you are trying to swallow them. I think that you are getting nervous about swalling them, so in your subconscious mind, you don't want to. This will prevent you from being able to swallow. But you are physically able, so all you have to do is relax.

Don't tip your head back, because that is harder. Take a few deep breaths until you feel you're ready. When you are comfortable enough, put the pill in your mouth and take a few small sips of water until it goes down. After you do this a few times, you should feel better about it and it won't take as long.

Maybe you could start up a little reward system. This has worked for me: Put a marble in a little jar after every time that you swallow a pill. When the jar is full, buy yourself a treat.

If all of this doesn't work, then is it possible to crush the pills and put it into applesauce or pudding? It isn't the best taste in the world, but if you really feel that you can't swallow, it isn't a bad alternative.

Good luck, and if you need anything else, don't hesitate to contact me. :)

Best wishes,
Hannah

Everyone who is capable of swallowing food is capable of swallowing a pill. It's just in your head & something you think about when you really shouldn't. If swallowing it with a lot of water does not work, try swallowing it along with your meal.

Actually, this is a very common problem. I myself know two people at least who can't swallow tablets and another person who can but only with the assistance of a bottle of Cola!

Try a tactic the woman I sit next to at work uses. She has a back problem and has to take several lots of painkillers a day. Have a little bit of something to eat. A sandwich or similar. Put a smallish bit of it in your mouth, chew and throw the tablet in when you're ready to swallow. Because you're ready to swallow your mouthful already, you shouldn't notice the tablet going down.

no there is nothing absolutely nothing wrong with that. im actually the same way when i have to swallow my pills. i just cant its difficult and hard and as much as i need to it doesnt come natural to me. like some people you know its just really easy for the to swallow. yea i have tried everything also. i just cant swallow, so i just chew it and then take a gulp of water. i think its just being afraid of swallowing things like for other people they dont care they just pop it in thier mouth and swallow. so just keep trying and ask people who can swallow without no problems how they do it. I just chew the nasty taste and try to get it done quickly. hope you can swallow the pills :)

Just relax & don't think about swallowing the pill so much. It'll go down eventually.

I have trouble swallowing pills too, probably because I think about it too much instead of just swallowing. Anyway, what I usually have to do is put the pill at the very back of my tongue, like almost to the point where you'll hit your gag reflex, and then close your mouth and swallow a little bit and just let the pill slide back. Don't know if you already do that, but it's worth a try.

Don't tilt your head back -- yeah, you'd think that it would work, but it actually makes it more difficult. Try placing the pill on the back of your tongue -- as far back as you can get it. Then don't gulp the water, just drink a couple of sips normally. Keep drinking & swallowing until it goes down, even if it takes a few sips. It definitely will go down, even if it feels like it doesn't want to -- just keep drinking and don't give up when it doesn't go down with the very first swallow. =]
