i like to read, whats wrong with that?

Question Posted Monday April 16 2007, 10:30 pm

what was the best book you have ever read when you were 13? or best book in general... that a 13 year old could read and comprehend? i feel like i've read all the good books. i've always loved reading since i was little.. im not like a geek/nerd or anything, some are just really good. uh.. my favorite kind of books are ones that are about kids like around my age.. doesnt matter the gender, going through life and etc, and... just like are good page turners. i dont care how long it is.. just not like 300 pages please! here are some of the books im already interested in and have read (uh.. i forget alot of others though lol)

- Shug by Jenny Han
- Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
- The Clique by Lisi Harrison
- How to be popular by Meg Cabot
- Avalon High by Meg Cabot
- Princess Diaries series by Meg Cabot
- Hoot (the novel)
- harry potter series
- a wrinkle in time
- any book by roald dahl
- junie b. jones - barbara park (haha i love these)
- any babysitter's club book
etc.

and please dont say like gossip girl, the it girl, a series of unfortunate events, and the chronicles of narnia.

THANKS!

PS: why do so many kids of today hate reading so much, anyway?

i'm 15/f, and you just described my bookshelf :) anyway, some really awesome authors are: sarah dessen (AMAZING) and laurie halse anderson. also, there's a book called "confessions of a teen nanny" and it's sort of a series- it's good too. have you read the mediator series by meg cabot? there are six of those and they are some of my favorite books ever. there is a book called "scrambled eggs at midnight" and the cover is white with two eggs and one looks like it has been kissed with green lipstick. i'm not sure who wrote it, but it is definitely one of the best books in the world. when you get older, or maybe if you're really mature for your age, you should read "the perks of being a wallflower", which is about a 15 year old boy, and "to kill a mockingbird", which is about two kids growing up in a town in mississippi in the 1930s or something. those two are definitely on my favorite book list. i'm trying to think of random stuff off the top of my head... if you haven't read "the notebook" by nicholas sparks, you are missing out. also, meg cabot writes some adult novels (not like trash novels, but just more mature) and i've read one of them (i can't remember which one) but they are really good. i think they're called like "the boy next door" and "boy meets girl" or something. i'm not quite sure. why do kids hate reading? i have no idea. i honestly wish that more kids did read. i can't understand people that are proud of the fact that they don't read. you know how on facebook/myspace it has the "favorite books" section and some people put "i don't read..."? that's the most annoying thing ever. it's like they're admitting to being morons. so i love when i get to answer questions like this about books for teens because people my age really should read more.

Personally, I LOVE anything by Sarah Dessen. If you've seen How To Deal, that movie was based on 2 books written by her (not her best though). My 2 favorites were This Lullaby and The Truth About Forever. Both were about romance, but also about a girl finding herself. Both were very, very good.

When I was thirteen, I read my favorite book, To Kill A Mockingbird, for the first time. Now, its more of something that you'd read in literature class, however its such a good story. Its interesting, and something you can truly learn from at the same time. I loved it when I was 13, so you might too.

The Kidnapping of Christina Lattimore by Joan Lowery Nixon. I really enjoyed that book. It's a mystery.

Go Ask Alice. Its a journal of a young girl and is about her experience with drug use.

And the most recent one I've read was My Sister's Keeper. It's about a girl your age that has a sister with cancer. She files for legal medical emancipation from her parents and its all about her families journey. This one is a tear jerker...

Good Luck, and Keep reading!

Brandi_S answered Monday April 16 2007, 11:40 pm:
When I was your age, I began my great love of Stephen King. He has been my favorite ever since.
I began reading Pet Semetary in the 6th grade, and my homeroom teacher called and complained about it to my mom, if you can believe that!

But his books are generally WAY over 300 pages. "The Stand" and a few others have over 1000. But I prefer long books, myself. I'm generally disappointed when the story is over, just because it is over.

Reading is a wonderful thing. You have to be able to read to do anything. Some people can't read at all, and things are so much harder for them.

Why do kids hate to read today? It's much easier to watch TV, see the movie adaptation, surf the internet, text message, or talk on the phone. Or so I firmly believe.

Mindless entertainment seems the easy way out, but you miss out on some good stories that way.

And, there is nothing wrong with liking to read. Believe it or not, you learn a lot from reading a book. Proper english, good grammar, good spelling skills, etc.

When I was 13? Hmm, I really liked Speak. That book was super good, and something someone could relate to. I also liked Breathing Underwater, and NIGHT. I think if you check those out, you'll like them. =)

Also, there's nothing wrong with reading. Just look at it this way -- while most kids are on the computer getting chunky & not doing anything to better themselves, you'll be smarter. You'll have a better vocabulary, which means better grammar & the way you speak. And you'll know what these words mean without looking them up. Keep reading, you're bettering yourself. You won't be the one who doesn't know jack squat about what someone else is talking about. =)
