healthy food Long story short--My mom and I are moving into an apartment, just the two of us. She wants me to make a list of foods that I want from the grocery store. Well, I want to start eating healthier than I do now (all my step dad would buy was fatty snacks and greasy foods).
So my question is.. What are some really good healthy snacks and meals and are organic foods good?

In my opinion organic foods are good, also I know that they do take a little bit to adjust to them, but you might go with your mom and look in the organic/healthier section. ]
healthy foods, here we go:fresh fruits, and vegges, peaches, strawberries, raspberries, banana's, whole grains, low-fat milk, beef, chicken, (not deep fried), oranges, celery(burns more calorie eating than celery has in it), apples, and asparagus. try to stay away from white rice and pop. ]
It all depends on your tastes. I know all about that low carb, low cal, low fat, good carb, blah blah blah...but if all you want is a healthy balanced list of foods, here are a few ideas.
-WATER WATER WATER...that's a given
-Fruits and vegetables. Fruit has a lot of sugar, but it's natural...and they're mostly water. A lot of them have negative calories as well, which means you burn more calories digesting it than it contains within the food. If you get canned fruit, make sure it says "no sugar added" or "light syrup"...never heavy!
-Protein is a must as well. Chicken, beef, tuna, etc. Also, beans and things like that.
-Whole grains are always best. Whole grain bread, rice, noodles, pasta, etc.
-As far as dairy products go, try skim milk. I don't drink milk, but I eat cereal every morning with it and I don't taste a difference and it's much lower calorie/fat. Cheese is good too, but unless you're doing low-carb, don't go too heavy on it. Yogurt, cottage cheese, etc are also good things to have on hand.
-As for snacks, there's always the trusty 100 Calorie Packs and South Beach Diet snacks (crackers, cookies, etc). There's also things like whole grain wheat thins or reduced fat...anything. There are sugar free or light ice cream and Popsicles that are good.
Look at the nutrition information and pay attention to the following things: serving size (they can try to trick you), fat, carbs, sugar, calories, fiber (fills you up and keeps you filling full...good thing!).
Just think sensibly and pay attention to your serving sizes.
And the most important part of health and fitness? Exercise regularly! Even if it's walking a mile 3-5 times a week, it does the body good. ]
Beef, chicken, eggs, oatmeal, yogurt, tuna, milk, pasta, whole grain breads and peanut butter and assorted fruits and veggies would be on top of my list.
The only organic thing I recommend is organic whole wheat pasta over regular pasta. Tastes just as good. ]
