i'm 5'5 and weigh 158lbs. i've been going on and off diets for awhile, and the one i was recently on worked great. i lost 15lbs on it! well, this weekend..i kind of over-ate and gained 5lbs back on (on thursday i weighed 152lbs).
i need tips on how to keep myself from cheating on my diets, and stick to it. i also need tips for snacking, excersising, and a way to beat cravings..
i have no deadline, really. if i can loose this weight before school ends, i'll be happy.
1) DIET CHEATING: I find that when I set out to go on a diet, I eat less healthily than usual. Why? Because I feel like I'm cheating myself of foods that I like.
Don't call it a diet. Just make it a mission to eat healthier. That way you won't resent that salad on your plate. Instead of thinking "This will help me lose weight", try thinking "This is full of vitamins" or "This is really healthy!". Mental outlook makes all the difference.
2) SNACKING & CRAVINGS: Here's the problem; a lot of people entirely cut out junk food, or only eat healthy snacks. Guess what? You're still going to crave chocolate, or ice cream, etc.
Rather than entirely cutting those things out of your diet, try having less of it. Instead of eating a whole chocolate bar, buy a bag of little chocolates (like Hershey's Kisses) and keep them in the freezer. Because they're hard, they're harder to eat, and because it takes you longer to eat them, your craving goes away without stuffing your face. If you really like ice cream, try sorbet or gelato, or low-fat ice cream or frozen yogourt. Just spoon out a half to 3/4 of a cup, and top it with tons of fresh fruit; berries, tropical fruit, etc. It's really tasty, and it kills your craving.
An easy substitution to make if you're craving chips is eating tortilla chips with salsa instead.
Remember that everything is okay, just as long as you eat it in moderation.
3) EXERCISE: If you're like me, you hate the gym. I can't exercise for the sake of exercising. If you're not enjoying what you're doing, then you won't feel motivated to do it.
What I did was to find an activity that I love. It took a little trial and error, but eventually I found that martial arts were the way for me to go. I personally love that I was learning while I was exercising, and I had goals set out for me (advancing in levels). Any activity where there are levels of advancement is a really good choice, because it motivates you to try harder and push yourself.
Other than that, drag a friend into it! When I wanted to start building my cardio endurance for karate, I made my best friend start going for jogs with me in the mornings before school. If you have a friend with you, chances are that you won't skip sessions. [ NinjaNeer's advice column | Ask NinjaNeer A Question ]
LagunaBabe answered Tuesday March 13 2007, 12:33 am: I myself, am not a fan of diets. I'm healthy, and suprisingly, that word isn't in my vocabulary (diet.) I recommend some excerise each day, such as running a mile, or on a treadmill -- you could join a gym. There are lots of ways to stay healthy, and lose weight in a good, healthy way. :)
1. Try to think of the reasons for your health, that you need to lose weight (if that's your reason.) Let those remind you every time you want to cheat, and that should beat your craving. If you want my advice though, eat what you want in small portions. It won't make you gain weight, if you eat in moderation and in small portions.
2. My tips for snacking are when you want snacks, go for the trail mix, yogurt, peanuts, fig bars, turkey sandwhichs, fruits, vegetables -- these are some of many healthy foods you can eat. They're yummy, and much healthier for you than candy bars and cakes. [ LagunaBabe's advice column | Ask LagunaBabe A Question ]
sheilawashere answered Monday March 12 2007, 11:07 pm: well..i have the problem too, and i have been losing weight! not that fast, but i my deadline is 3 months, and i`m sure that i will be fine. All i`ve been doing is eating what i eat, but i eat it with little bites, and i actually chew the food, instead of swallowing it whole. i also run, and i`m starting to play sports, so that`s a plus. Take on a sport, and that would be a great help! [ sheilawashere's advice column | Ask sheilawashere A Question ]
Durene answered Monday March 12 2007, 11:05 pm: the person below me deserves 5 stars, deff! that stuff will help me too! um.. i guess you can join a track team or stick to a sport you love! diets in my opinion dont work. in order for everything to work well you have to change your bad eating habits entirely. sure you can eat some crap food in a while but like.. dont NOT eat them or soon you'll want to have a whole lot.. have like some maybe once a week or two or whatever? dont like punish yourself if you want some chocolate. a great way to beat cravings is to eat ice whenever you feel a craving. my mom does it and she also does like this aerobics thingy called "taebo" and shes been losing weight gradually! the most important part is the ice part, though. shes become an iceaddict, lol. and um ride your bike, rollerblade, skateboard, etc! so much to do to be fit! step one, get yo ass off the chair you're sitting in! lol good luck too <3
dont feel too bad, im about the same height and weight as you, too.
ductape_n_roses answered Monday March 12 2007, 10:56 pm: I believe that the average weight for you should be around 125lbs. So aiming for 30lbs is a great idea but don't try to achieve it all at once because the faster you lose it, the more likely it gets that you'll gain those pounds back--really quickly!
Here is a tip about exercising: going on a same routine for a while won't help! You need to switch it up as much as you can. Why? Because your body will grow accustomed to your exercise habits and will no longer burn as much calories than when you first started. So I'd say do these exercises and make sure you switch them up as often as you can =]
Try and do one or two of those above everyday. It seems like a hassel but you'll get into the habit of setting aside 15min for these everday. Start with a reasonable number and gradually increase and I mean GRADUALLY.
A good way to make sure you're switching is to get index cards and write each of the exercises and get them into 2 differnet piles (exercises from the first list and exercises from the 2nd list). Pick random ones from each deck and it will likely help you with varying your exercise. If you don't know what some of the exercises are/want a few more exercises, message my inbox =]

Now, for the eating part...
You must eat all your meals! Because if you skip meals, your body will just end up storing more fat because it knows that it's not going to get food in between a meal...if that made sense. Now, that doesn't mean you can go off and eat everything anytime you get hungry.
5 Meal rule: (all food consumed must be healthy)
Breakfast:
Whole wheat/grain toast with light cream cheese or low fat peanut butter with fresh fruit OR english muffin with light cream cheese are MUCH better than sugary cereals, eggs, bacon, etc.
Snack:
Fresh fruits (sliced apple, grapes), dried fruit, whole wheat crackers with low fat cheese, yogurt, veggies, etc.
Lunch:
Whole wheat bread with lean meats, low fat peanut butter, etc. and fresh fruit or salad with low fat dressing.
Snack:
Same as the above one
Dinner:
Grilled chicken or fish, baked potatos, fruits, veggies
Beverages:
H2O should be your best friend. Try and limit your soda intakes and make them diet if you have to drink them. Juices should be like orange juice or something with not much added flavor/sugar in there. Milk should be fat free or low fat.
Basically my point here is to eat healthy foods. The snacks in between help you from getting too hungry causing you to splurge yourself with food during meals. Limit junk food/fast food intakes but not completely get rid of them. Instead of potato chips, ask your mom if she can buy pretzels. Have you or your mom cut up fruits/veggies into serving size and put them on the eye leveled shelf of the fridge so when you're hungry, they're right there for you to eat.
Remember that exercise isn't the only thing to lose weight. Eating is very important. don't overwork yourself and gradually increase your intensity of your workout or you might injure youself...
