there is also something called sensory memory. sensory memory lasts about 2 seconds. look at a picture, and then close your eyes. you can still sorta see it in your mind. then it fades. tahts sensory. a good way to get something from short term into long term is to repeadedly take it into short term. which means look, try to remember, let yourself forget, look, try to remember, let yourself forget. etc. then youll need to reinfoce it over the course of the next few days. just because something is in your long term memory, doesnt mean you have access to it. for example, you might have stored a phone number in your long term memory, but you might forget it. then, if you look at the first few numbers, youll remember the rest. this also reinforces, and will eventually form a pathway that will allow you to easilly remember the number at any time. for example, i still remember the phone number of a girl i shared a ride with in junior high, despite the fact that i have not called it in almost over 5 years. ]
i did my science fair on this last year. when you learn somthing, it automatically goes into short term memory. then your brain decides if it should go into long term memory or not. if it dosent, it will only stay in your brain for about 30 seconds. repeating somthing will emphasize its importance, and will make it more likely to go into long term memory ]
working memory and short-term memory is the same thing. An example of that would be having someone say 1-7-18-4-10-14-3, and repeating it back to them. An example of long term memory is remembering those numbers for longer than a few minutes. Things go from short term memory to long term when you use them a lot. So if you needed to repeat 1-4-5-7 after I said it, you'd repeat that in your head until you said it; that's short term memory. If you say that to yourself for a long time, you'll be able to stop saying it to yourself, and recall what they were; the numbers have then passed into your long-term memory. ]
