my first period. =o

Question Posted Sunday February 11 2007, 12:18 am

okay so Friday i got my first period and i didnt go to school. its really gross because its like a REALLY heavy flow and it is just so gross. i have pads like carefree original.. but i dont like them. i mean they dont work well and i keep getting stains and its so gross. i dont like the brand im using and find it so gross about like the flow and everything. and im so worried like i have school on monday and this is my first period. like what the heck am i suppose to do? like .. wear am i suppose to put the pad and stuff. i dont even want to use a pad but like i guess im kind of embarresed to ask my mom to go get me tampons. and even if i DID have tampons to try like firstly, i would have no idea what to do like to get them in and like when to change them ect. AND like what brand would be good because i have like sports and crap. this is so overwelming for me because its my first time. and ALSO i hate the feeling i have like when like theres a flow because i just like feel so dirty (and since i have been grounded for like a week i've been home alot) and i just like take a bath and stuff and i feel clean. like this whole thing is just ew.
any advice??
ew. =]

Welcome to the life of being a woman. :) I know it feels disgusting, but just wash yourself as often as you can. Working your period into your school at first is a bit overwhelming. First off, if you want to use tampons (which I highly recommend, they're so much "cleaner" & easier), talk to your mom. You shouldn't feel embarassed to ask to buy tampons because every woman gets their period & needs them. It's completely natural & I highly doubt your mother will make a big deal about it. Since you mentioned you play sports, you can get the Playtex Sports tampons designed for women who obviously play sports & need more protection. If not that, I'd suggest Tampax Pearl. Eventually, you'll learn to know more about your period & how often you'll need to change your pad/tampon. If your period is somewhat heavy, I'd suggest changing after couple-few hours. For lighter days, you can go for a little longer. If you decide to use tampons & your period is pretty heavy to the point where you're scare of leaks, use a pantyliner as well. But if you're absolutely set on the idea of sticking with pads (which are more "dirtier" & gross in my opinion), stick with an overnight pad for heavy days. I'd suggest carrying a purse or even a makeup bag with some tampons/pads to change in between classes. If you don't want to carry a purse & don't have anywhere else to put them in, just leave them in your locker & slip one in your pocket before heading to the restroom. Just read the tampon box for instructions. I know at first it seems difficult, but with a couple attempts, you'll have it down in no time. Good luck! :)

I do suggest you wear a tampon. Pads are uncomfortable and in the way. Dont be embarassed to ask. Your mom has been through the same thing and should understand. I suggest getting tampax pearl. They have smooth tips and are very easy to insert. The main thing about getting a tampon in is to relax. If your muscles are tense down there, it will hurt ALOT to try to insert. Also, every box of tampons comes with a peice of paper showing you how to insert it exactly. Relaxation is the key. You can keep a tampon in for up to 6 hours but with tampax pearl, it has an absorbent string so when that string turns red, you should take it out and replace it. Hope I could help :)

Hahaha, yeah this whole thing can be pretty eww.. all the time. Pads are good for when your sleeping or for when your ending your period, but when your just on it, tampon time. Wearinga tampon is the best !! You dont feel anything (if u wear pads, you feel it all) and you can keep it in for 4-6 hours. When you first put it in it hurts, because it has to break thru, but its not that bad..trust me you'll know where to put it, because theres only one hole for it. Definitely ask your mom before monday, because you dont want to be wearing a pad. Bring a pad in your purse and then when it comes to lunch time at school go to the bathroom, because lunch time is enough hours to have it in. And because you had a tampon on it will take a while for you to feel anything with a pad. Hope this helped.. ne more questions just ask me k. :)

Get pads that are branded "heavy" or "thick. [go figure].

& when it's time to change it, go to the bathroom, throw it away in the garbage that is in the bathroom stall, and put a new one on??

And as for tampons, all u do is stick it in, read the box,gosh.
And as for the brand, pick the expensive ones and the ones that say "heavy" or "thick".

Dont be embarassed about your mom, she had it too.

=] have fun, i hate periods lol.

Disposable pads and tampons are very unhealthy and bad for the environment. Check some health food stores for Divacups, Keepers, or Mooncups. They are rubber cups that you wear like tampons, but they don't cause TSS and they last about ten years. Flannel pads are very comfortable and healthy too.

Periods are almost always very heavy and uncomfortable for the first few times. They lighten when you get out of puberty.

Yeah. It's kind of gross. You can get pads like Always with wings. They're more comfortable. Scented products can disguise some of the odor. If you get tampons, ask for Tampax Pearl or something with a plastic applicator and get the slender or junior absorbency. Change it every 4 hours at least. To get them in, there are instructions on the sheet inside the box, but you basically hold your labia apart with your non-dominant hand, put your thumb and ring finger on of the other hand on the middle part of the tampon, at the base of the top component, then push the top part in until your fingers touch your vagina, then, with your index finger, push the sliding stick in to insert the tampon inside. You may have to try different positions, like standing in front of the toilet with one foot on the lid. You may want to use a pantyliner with your tampon because you can still leak a little. Good luck.
