Question Posted Saturday February 10 2007, 11:20 am
I got a new cat in March of 2006. My other cat before her was an outside cat more than an inside one. But one night she got hit by a car, and we had to put her to sleep.
When I got my new cat, my family and I decided to make it an indoor one, so the same thing wouldn't happen to her. We live on a very busy street so I felt it was OK to make her an indoor cat. But I feel horrible every day that she can't go outside. We already declawed her, so we can't just make her an outdoor cat. And yeah, I feel a little bad for declawing her because I feel it's inhumane, but she was ripping stuff up, and tearing carpets and furniture up.
When I see her every day, looking at the window, she just looks and sounds like she is sad, and I keep feeling I should of made her an outside cat, but I don't want the same thing to happen to her, as to what happened to my other cat. She just always looks depressed. I seriously don't know, but how can I tell how she is feeling?
Also, am I doing what is right for my cat? I mean if I was stuck indoors all my life I would be pretty depressed, yet I don't want my cat to feel the same way. What can I do?
Thanks for reading and anything is greatly appreciated!
Additional info, added Sunday February 11 2007, 8:20 pm: Thanks to everyone for giving out your advice, but I noticed people mentioning about leashes and invisible fences. I am not really into those because I find the fences inhumane and my cat hates leashes (already tried that). So FYI to people who want to add something, please don't suggest those.
I am sorry for not mentioning that, and I hope that doesn't affect anyone's wish to answer my question.

OXJustineXO answered Sunday February 11 2007, 3:35 pm: I really dont think she is sad.
Im not sure though..
But maybe you could get a little fence or something.
Or im not sure if they have it where you live, but invisable fence. Its like 200$ or a little more though but its really worth it. Its a like invisable fence, with wires, and your animal wears a collor, and you train it at first so its not cruel, but it helps so your animal cant get out of the yard, while having the coller on.

She doesn't necessarily long to be outdoors. She's living the high life, to be quite honest. Cats are territorial, and the inside of your house is her stomping ground. (In fact, she thinks it's HER house and you just live there to tend to her like a slave.)
I have an indoor cat, and, though he is curious about what's outside, he refuses to go out the door. Inside is his territory, and outside is unfamiliar grounds. He is a happy cat living in the house, I assure you. Your cat is probably happy with her situation as well. [ Brandi_S's advice column | Ask Brandi_S A Question ]

yourrtrustyhelpline answered Saturday February 10 2007, 1:01 pm: well, with this problem, there are two things you can do to make your cat happier:
- one thing you can do is buy a leash for your cat. i know that sounds wierd, but atleast your cat will be able to be outside, and you don`t have to worry about her getting run over.
- the second thing you can do is buy one of those kennel things. they will probably have them at petsmart or petco, and actually i`ve seen them at costco as well. set one of those up in your backyard and put you cat in it. then she can be outside&safe as well. When I had this problem what I did was that I bought it a leash and tried to take her out. See that way she was out and protected with the leash. I know that would looks weired like a cat in a leash but its for your cats safety. After I started doing that my cat was happier!. I was happy because I know that they are like us they have feelings to. I hoped I helped. [ blackluna7111's advice column | Ask blackluna7111 A Question ]
Sabine answered Saturday February 10 2007, 12:29 pm: That does sound sad. There are two things you can do. You can try to leash train your cat so she can go out with you. The other is that you can buy big cages that stay outside and allow the cat to get some outdoor time with fresh air and grass to eat, etc. It's a tough call. If you can get to a Petsmart or call a shelter, someone can help you decide what to do. It's sweet that you're so concerned about your kitty.
vomski10 answered Saturday February 10 2007, 12:27 pm: you are doing whats right because your protecting you cat. and mostly she looks outside cuz she's curious as to what goes on. maybe you could buy her toys for indoors. and also at pet stores or maybe vet offices too(i'm not sure about that one) they have cat harnesses and it's pretty much a harness on your cat with a leash so you can take her outside and maybe go out back and let her play around in the grass. hope i helped!
