M=slope why does m stand for slope? my teacher said we would learn when we get to high school. But i want to know now. who can tell me? i rate all answers

in the formula that expresses slope-
y=mx+b, i did some research
montar is a french word, that means to rise or go upwards. that is the slope
b= y-intercept
b is thought to think to stand for - beginning

I never really questioned that.
I just.. thought it was a variable for slope.. and I always looked at M as if it meant Slope.

Slope is derived from the Latin root slupan for slip. Like.. a line graph, going downward or something. ]
Apparently the word for slop in like.. Latin? I think it was, starts with an 'm'. Which really isnt that exciting but thats what I learned. ]
