thelaura answered Friday December 22 2006, 8:32 pm: If you're preventing pregnancy by only using a condom and not birth control such as pills etc, DO NOT USE VASELINE AS LUBE.
It's oil based, and can damage the condom causing it to rip. [ thelaura's advice column | Ask thelaura A Question ]

OIL BASED LUBRICANTS
Oil based products have been used as lubricants for a very long time. Things like Vaseline and baby oil are petroleum based. The first problem is that they leave a coating on the vaginal wall that is very hard to get rid of - thus increasing the chance of bacteria and other infections. The second problem using an oil based lubricant is that the chemicals break down and destroy latex condoms, dental dams, gloves, diaphrams, cervical caps, sponges, as well as the protective coatings around some IUDs and any sexual device made of latex. This can also apply to body oils and creams which are never very good lubricants because they are absorbed into the skin too fast.
