getting drafted

Question Posted Wednesday December 13 2006, 8:40 pm

I'm a guy and I just turned 18. I'm basically afraid of getting drafted, and so are my parents. They said they would do anything to get me out of it if I ever did get drafted, like move me to a different country or make me handicapped or something.

I just want to know how likely it is for a draft to happen.

Worry not my friend, the chances of the draft coming back are HIGHLY unlikely. I am a member of the U.S. military (AirForce) and the truth is that there are going to be military cut-backs nationwide, more specifically over 40,000 military members will be forced to separate by 2009. Essentially, if more and more of us are losing our jobs due to the fact that there are too many of us, there's really no need to innitiate another draft. So don't go about moving to Canada or breaking your legs or cutting a finger off just yet! Happy birthday!

Unlikely...we havent had a draft since the 1940's and with all the people voluntarily joining the armed forces, you have hardly any chance of being drafted

Relax. There isn't going to be a draft, the anti-Bush liberal media just kicks shit around to push their own jealous agenda. One more reason to watch the Fox News channel.

Don't worry. The war in Iraq is a disaster, but not that much of a disaster.

You'd need a real war (think WW1/WW2) to have to really worry about being drafted.

If Iraq turns into Vietnam and people start being drafted, move to Canada! It's great up here, and we won't get involved unless it's necessary.

Oh, but if you live in North Korea, you have to join the army, by law.

I'll make a few comments as a Veteran, and I'll try hard not to flame you and stay objective.

There is almost no way on God's green earth that you will be drafted, unless North Korea nukes us, or Heaven forbid something along those lines. Seriously, if the only reason you are worried about the draft is the whole Iraq mess, I can tell you this now: America will pull out of Iraq, before they approve a draft. We are close to pulling out, and have been on the verge for some time now. We are at a tipping point politically between those that think that its a waste to stay, and those that think we should. But you throw a draft in the mix, and I guarantee we'd be pulling out with a quickness.

Rep. Rangel (D-NY) has been promoting this, but there isn't enough support for it. IMO part of his thinking is that had the White House had to promote a draft in order to invade Iraq in the first place, for example, then perhaps Bush wouldn't have been in such a hurry to get into Iraq. Yes or no, right or wrong, the majority of the American public opposes a draft.

The Military opposes a draft as well. While the military would do just about anything to get recruitment up, it has a hard enough time weeding out people who shouldn't be there out of volunteers - if there was a draft, the military would be sidled with scores of people it would deem 'unfit'. And as a volunteer soldier, I would sure as hell not want my back guarded by someone who doesn't WANT to be there guarding my back, and will run at the first opportunity (or shoot me in the back, and THEN run).

I'm a proud American, I'd still be serving if I could. I disagree with Bush and his policies, yet I am still willing to serve my country, I'd still put my life on the line. Even though I disagree with the Iraq war, I'd still do my duty.

I'm not going to say that you're a traitor or a coward; your not - though I would question just what you feel your level of obligation to America, as a citizen, is. I hope you and your family doesnt think its just a 'free ride' while the going is good. Feel free to disagree on a political level, I sure as hell do - I hated the decision to go to Iraq, and I still do. But remember that loyalty and service to our country DOES NOT equal loyalty and service to politicians or to 'el presidente', though following their mandates is a bitter pill to swallow indeed. You can still serve in a non-combat role even IF a draft does go through. But I ask you this now, and I am not alone when I say this - you aren't willing to serve if a draft is instituted, yet you are willing to live in America and reap all America has to offer? I'm not sure what to tell you really, without going off on a rant here. But I still feel those eligible for the draft should register, and not avoid it. Had that happened throughout our history, America wouldn't be what it is today.

I'm a Liberal at heart, and yet I think that its cowardly to sidestep the draft to move to Canada. If you would consider moving to avoid a draft, just move anyways and get it over with; Canadas a nice place to live (I'm being serious). If you think that thinking is harsh, wait and see if some conservatives decide to weigh in on this, seriously.

'make you handicapped'...seriously...every dead veteran would be ashamed.

unless there is a disaster that wipes out the national guard and reserves, your chances are very unlikely. i'm a male who's eighteen too. when i was a sophomore in h/s i thought that serving my country was the best thing to do, but after finding out the truths of our invasion of iraq in my political science class, my attitude has changed entirely. i suggest you don't fret over this and just support any people you know fighting in iraq right now.
