anxiety disorder

Question Posted Tuesday November 28 2006, 10:44 pm

I have horrible anxiety in many areas and im sure i have an anxiety disorder. i'll end up talking to a dr about this, but i was wondering; what medications can the prescribe someone under 18 for anxiety disorders? Like, i'm thinking valium and lots of drugs like that are for 18 and over. Anyone know what they prescribe to teens? (i'll be 17 next month)

I'm 15 and they perscribed me Paxil and a bunch of others. They finally put me on Busparone. I think that's how you spell it. It works pretty good. I have anxiety attacks and it helped that alot.
I hope I helped you.

I also suffer from anxiety, and this upsets me more than I care to admit. I am soon to be 24 years old, and had my first anxiety attack in May of 2006. I ended up in the hospital and they gave me Ativan.

When my doctor heard about this, he was strongly against the fact that they gave me Ativan or any drugs at all and advised me not to take any drugs for my anxiety as they are severely addictive, and are merely a replacement for what you're lacking in your life in which may cause anxiety.

You're only 16, almost 17, and while my doctor didn't want to prescribe me anything for my debilitating anxiety, I highly doubt that he will prescribe you a drug. Don't be disappointed, though, because luckily enough, with the right support system anxiety can be beaten. But you have to have the 'want' for it to be beaten. It's tough, but you can do it.

Good luck~

No one is going to give you Valium. Anxiety is normally treated with a group of medications call SSRI's. Medications like Celexa, Prozac and such are SSRI's. Depression is treated with the same kind of medications.

Don't be disappointed however if your doctor doesn't just hand over pills. Medication can be very successful in treating anxiety but there are a whole host of problems with it. A doctor will always look for a health problem, or suggest counseling first. Medication is a rather extreme course of actions reserved for people with extreme anxiety. Counseling is a far more effective treatment of anxiety anyways; medication just treats the symptoms, counseling can actually cure it.

EDIT:
Hun, I have no idea why you are angry with me, or with Nallie for that matter. We both answered your question with honest and acurate information. No one is judging you dear, but please, go see a doctor quickly so you can start to address the issues you are having.

Valium is not the drug of choice for anxiety disorders anymore. There are better medications avaiable. The Dr will take several things into consideration before prescribing any medication for anxiety. In addition, I do not believe that medication is the only answer. Many of the drugs have dangerous side effects so you will have to be monitored closely. Your best bet is to go to the Dr, and then research the medication after it is prescribed, that way you don't go with any preconceived ideas about what works and what doesn't.
