orphans answered Sunday November 19 2006, 3:11 pm: most paint coats have a metal base to them and it takes a lot for birds to eat through metal with just their doo doo. most paint consists of acrylic, a metal base, and other such things. some paints have more metal others have less. but the fact is you should be okay, just wash your car regularly and you'll make it okay. your paint probably has a clearcoat which helps tons too. the worst things for paint aren't birdshit or other things nature throws at it, but the things people do. stickers, rubbing the dry surface of the car with your hands, things of that nature. rick505 answered Sunday November 19 2006, 6:23 am: Mystics right about the acidity of birdstuff but whether damage happens depends more on the condition of your cars paint. If you have a newer car with paint in good-excellent condition the bird stuff will have a hard time getting through the wax and or clear coat. But if your paint is several years old and starting to oxidize the bird stuff will eat into to it much as mystic says. if you drive a beater car with an old paint job the bird stuff wont discolor the paint anymore than the sun already has so you wont notice anything. your best bet is to clean it off within a few days(4) if you think your car falls into the middle category. One of the charactaristics of bird shit is that it is acidic. Not highly, but enough that if bird crap sits on a pain job, it slowly eats away at it. This can cause holes in your clear coat, discolored splotches in the base paint beneath it, and if left on long enough its insanely hard to remove because its kinda melted its way inside your paint. queenhearts answered Saturday November 18 2006, 10:44 pm: No.. if it did.. people would have a lot of damage to their cars. I know people can't afford a new paint job.
From experience, it doesn't ruin car paint.
I'm sure if it did, some person would come up with a car cover against bird feces haha.
MaxwellsSilverHammer answered Saturday November 18 2006, 10:33 pm: I've had birds drop bombs on my car thousands of times, and never has there been any damage to the paint job.
Edit: To Mystic_Sandwich, I'm sorry for assuming that the person wouldn't let the bird shit sit on their car long enough to possibly cause damage. My experience -- as my answered alludes to -- is not that. [ MaxwellsSilverHammer's advice column | Ask MaxwellsSilverHammer A Question ]
