Guy with long hair

Question Posted Thursday November 16 2006, 4:07 am

Hey, I'm a guy and I grow my hair out long, over a foot in length. I wear it parted in the middle and pulled back in a pony-tail, and have had it like this for several years now. Just recently, I've started having a lot of breakage in my hair, lots in the shower drain and in the brush or comb. (no, I am not going bald, in case you're wondering) I can see the ends where the hair has broken and it's looking really bad.

Is there a type of shampoo or conditioner that works well for longer hair and prevents breakage? I've been doing other things that my girlfriend suggested such as using a hairdryer and certain ways of combing. But I still have a lot of breakage problem. Don't want to cut it off, either, as I like having it long. =P

Any advice or suggestions? If it helps at all, my hair is also very fine, not thick or curly.

My fiance' has a sister that does hair..I always ask her on stuff like this..

She said to trim it maybe half an inch.
Then buy some Mane & Tail shampoo and conditioner.
:]

Hey. I use this shampoo its by garnier fructis and it is called length and strength. It prevents breakage and split ends and adds shine to long hair. Good luck hope I helped ♥

You need to just trim the ends to get rid of the breakage. There is no way to repair the damage already done. You don't have to cut your hair short,
just trim it a little. If there is a lot, just trim a little and then when it grows out trim a little more until you get it all.

A BIG cause of breakage is blow drying. So unless you have to have your hair dry in a big hurry I just wouldn't do it at all. :)

I also have long, fine hair and I can promise you - the only way to keep it looking fairly healthy at the ends is to have it trimmed every now and then. There are plenty of products out there that might make a small, short-term difference but ultimately you're just going to have to chop off the dry, brittle ends. Just half an inch off will make a difference if you're worried about losing too much length. You could even get your girlfriend to do it if you don't want to pay someone to do such a small job - it's dead easy and I'm sure she'll know how. Good luck! x

First things first, let me start off with some facts:

1)As your hair grows longer, it's going further away from your scalp.

Your scalp secretes sebum which protects your hair and so those at the lower ends of your hair will not be as protected as those on top as they don't get as much sebum.

This is why are there things such as split ends.

2)Trim the ends of your hair regularly (bout once in 3 mths) to get rid of split ends

3)Use a brush instead of a fine-tooth comb. A fine tooth comb makes your hair wave cos of static electricity.

4)To prevent hair loss : Don't yank your hair while un-tangling hair knots or when washing your hair. BE GENTLE to your hair. When you wet your hair, run a brush through it b4 shampooing to reduce any formation of knots while shampooing.

5) The hairdryer is the hair's deadliest enemy. The heat is gonna give you lots of split ends cos it dries your hair up. So stay away from it if you can.

6) Use a conditioner while shampooing AND apply moisturiser when your hair dries. Concentrate on conditioning the ends of your hair.

I'm using DOVE conditioner, SILKEN shampoo and moisturiser and it's really great. SILKEN is a japanese product. I don't know if your country does import SILKEN from japan but do look out for that brand. It's not a very common brand but it's a great hair pdt.

Try not to tie it as often cos you are suffocating your hair. Don't you feel that your hair's dryer when you tie it up?

That's cos you're pulling it away from your scalp and depriving it of more sebum.

Most importantly, constantly condition and take good care of your hair.
