orginally "emo" came from "Emotive Hardcore," a type of music. Now people use it, emo as "emotional," to describe a type of person. (very emotional, wrist slitting)

emotional people.

Emo (an abbreviation of "emotionally-driven Hardcore punk") is a term now broadly used to describe almost any form of guitar-driven alternative rock that expresses emotions beyond traditional punk's limited emotional palette of alienation and rage. It is also used to describe fans of this genre, most commonly teenagers. (e.g., emo kid). The actual term "emo" originated in the mid-1980s D.C. scene, with the band Rites of Spring, as well as bands such as Fugazi, Moss Icon, and Antioch Arrow. ...

Emo is short for emotional.

This is usually a stereotypical word for people who wear black, have their bangs over their eyes, their hair dyed, listen to depressing music all the time, and are just plain depressing, which is not true.

I've seen so many kids who are labeled "emo" by others, and they're the happiest kids I've ever met. They're just labeled that because they wear black. Blah, I'm rambling, sorry.

Anyways, I hope I helped.

Nowadays, a sterotypical word. >_<
An "emo" is just a person who's depressed somewhat
I don't think of it as the music they listen to, or clothes they wear though.

I mean, they're still people. Along with 'preps', 'punks', 'gangsters', and such
But hey, everyone how's their own opinion now, eh?

Emo means when you cut your wrists and you try and hide it from people. It is also the shorter word for emotional.

hi there!

emo is a sterotype. Emo is short for the word emotional which has a lot to do with emos. Following this sterotype, and emo has swoopy black hair and is very skinny. they are a lot of the time anti social and cut themselves. they are whiney and want the world to know their problems. they want people to feel bad for them. they normally wear all black and very tight jeans. theyre not really goth or punk, but those other two sterotypes are the closest thing to emo. go to these two links they are funny songs about emos they explain it very well.

duudee_advicer answered Sunday October 29 2006, 9:18 am:
Emo comes from Emotional.
The label is usually placed upon people who dye their hair black (usualy have unnatural hair cuts to go along with it), cut their wrists, listen to emo, hardcore, rock music, wear shirts with depressing slogans, and may or may not be suicidal.

Most emo boys dress in very tight jeans and fitted shirts, the girls layer alot in dark colors such as black and red.

Good Luck. <3

CHECKERED-LOVE answered Sunday October 29 2006, 8:27 am:
its like a cross between punk and goth. some people stereotype emos to always cut their wrists but thats not true at all! people who are emo like emo music (most of the time) and they are just people. some people also say that emos hate life so its kind of an unsteady word. but i dont think you should walk around calling people emo.

The word 'emo' is short for 'emotional' and is a sterotypical label as well as a genre of music. People labelling themselves as 'emos' tend to dress in similar ways - skinny jeans, Converse chucks etc - as well as the infamous 'emo fringe', black eye liner, dark hair etc. They also tend to listen to bands considered 'emo' such as My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday and Funeral For A Friend.

They are usually associated with self harm and depression - which is where they get their name.
