NinjaNeer answered Tuesday October 24 2006, 5:25 pm: I know what you mean... I have a pet gecko, and my housemates won't come near my room, they're so scared of him. And he's only 6 inches long! That's the thing with a phobia, it's an irrational fear. [ NinjaNeer's advice column | Ask NinjaNeer A Question ]

MelLeDisko answered Tuesday October 24 2006, 4:12 pm: Some people think that since rats come from the sewers and other types of dirty places, god knows what kind of possible disease or at least unhealthy germs they're carrying on their bodies.
Plus, to some people, they find rats ugly and freaky looking. Like I know plenty of people who hate their eyes and how they always glow and stuff whenever you shine a light on them and like spiders freak me out. I find them horrible and ugly, so to some, that's whats rats are to them.
thelaura answered Tuesday October 24 2006, 7:07 am: If I saw a rat running around my room for example, my reaction would be the same.
People associate rats as vermin pests which come out in dirty areas. Truth is, wild rats in cities may be suffering from malnutrition.. doesn't necessarily mean they're spreading diseases to humans.
"The rat makes a fine pet, known for its intelligence, playfulness and sociability. They are extremely clean. Rats can be taught entertaining tricks, in the same way as many other domesticated animals." shows they actually aren't that bad. :) [ thelaura's advice column | Ask thelaura A Question ]
Mousetower answered Tuesday October 24 2006, 6:58 am: It's because wild rats tend to carry diseases and hang around dirty places. It's a natural reaction that, unfortunately, extends to pet rats too.
It's a shame, because pet rats are pretty cool. [ Mousetower's advice column | Ask Mousetower A Question ]
