Diet soda as fake sugar such as splenda, which contains aspartame and studies have shown that this ingredient is known to "fry" your brain cells. I myself, have cut out pop all together because their are zero health benefits, is empty calories and eats away at your teeth.

Diet soda uses artificial sweetners instead of sugar, so there's less carbohydrates. But artificial sweetners are all chemicals, and certain studies have linked them to cancer, so some people avoid them. I mean, it seems like almost everything in the world can be shown to cause cancer if you research it enough, but it's something to think about.
Personally I think they're both bad for you. No one has ever proved that switching to diet soda helps you lose weight.
