Alin75 answered Sunday October 8 2006, 4:54 am: Thing is right, one can find these basic tips on the net (which i believe the other columnists have given you below), but they can lead you in the wrong direction sometimes.
While some people may look away when they lie, others might do so when they are trying to recall a fact (just to give one example). I am not saying that those guidelines are all wrong. The important thing when trying to figure out when someone is lying is spotting a change in their behaviour. If, for example, a person tends to maintain eye contact a lot and then suddenly starts looking away then you might have caught a liar.
I dont know if you have ever seen Derren Brown. He is goes around reading peoples minds and that sort of thing. Anyway, while a lot of his stuff can be a bit far out, he did a segment on lying that was very interesting imo. Anyway, heres a link to this segement:
You have 3 videos on the left where he determines when 3 people are lying. Kind of a fun exercise. On the right he explains what to look for. I think its a good read, hope it can help you out. [ Alin75's advice column | Ask Alin75 A Question ]

MelLeDisko answered Saturday October 7 2006, 11:47 pm: Usually you can tell their lying if:
- they seem nervous
- they won't make eye contact
- they might stutter or stumble with words
- they seem to take awhile telling their story ( which might mean they're making it up as they go along )
- they might get self-defensive trying to back up their story
- their story doesn't fit in too well with the situation, or they keep changing their story
It's usually really hard to tell if someone's lying, but sometimes they don't noticing they're giving off vibes and weird body movements that people might do when they're nervous or lying about something.
Advicelady6798 answered Saturday October 7 2006, 11:16 pm: usually when they roll their eyes alot they are lying. And if the story their telling doesn't exactly fit then you know they are lying. One way to find out if they are lying is to start asking people in your school or the closest ones to them and find out if it is true or not. That way you find out the truth in a nonhumiliating way.
