It might say this because...
If you have pictures on there that takes up memory.
If the songs are long, like 6 minutes then it takes more memory.
I'ts 500 songs if the songs are each about 4 minutes and you dont have a alot of pictures.

Hope this helps!

It can hold 500 songs but thats not including pictures that takes up some of the memory and if the songs are longer than your average song than that also takes up more memory. If you still think that there something wrong take it back to were you got it from and they should fix it.

It might not be able to hold up to 500 songs because when they say that 2 gygabytes holds 500 songs; they mean an average of like 3 or 3 1/2 minutes per song... you probably have either pictures or really long songs on your ipod and that's why it's doing that. if not, then you should probably bring it back to the place where you got it & then figure out the problem. i hope i helpedd :]

its probably b.c you might have like 5 or 7 minute songs and when they say 500 they are thinking like 2 min songs. i have a ipod nano that hold 1000s songs but really it only holds like 800 something
just only put on songs you really like and listen to

well, i don't know what the problem could be, but i suggest taking it back to where you got it or taking it to best buy or somewhere and seeing what the problem is and if they can try updating it and fixing it. they've fixed mine before whenever it did something like that. i hope i helped.
