Harrassment Out Of Control

Question Posted Thursday August 24 2006, 5:55 pm

Does anyone know if theres a way I can have voicemails from my cell phone traced to find out who left them? I want to ask the police but im not sure if they can do that. Also, is there any way I can have IMs traced back? Or to get the people who own the screen names in trouble? The harrassment is out of control. Thank you :)

Ofcoarse You can go to the police about this and they would be most happy to help you. herassment is not ok anywhere in the world. If you dont want to go alone i suggest yu bring a friend or parent. xoxo maddie

Well, for phone calls, just call the police and tell them about the harassment and they'll probably try and trace the phone number for you and they'll get in trouble and you can block the number, probably. But as for the IMs, I don't think there's really anything you can do. Whenever people IM me I keep them talking, and then I'll have a friend IM them and be like,"Hey Amanda!" or some random name and then they'll go,"This isn't Amanda, this is ______" and I'll try and get their name that way. Or I'll just save their screename, and then the next time they sign on I'll know and I also check their profiles to see if they have a link or something to their myspace. Also, you can always just block their screename. I hope I helped. <3

I actually had a similar problem a few years ago. A guy was sending me obscene text messages and threats and I didn't know who it was. Eventually, my Mum made me go to the police and they kept hold of my phone for a couple of days. They tracked the telephone number, went to the guy's house and gave him a stern warning. They then managed to arrange for his number to be blocked. I never had a moment's hassle after that.

I am not so sure about Instant Messages, I'm afraid. I think the only way they would be able to do that is to take in your PC and trace them that way, if possible. Following this, the chances are they would just serve them a warning and any further action would be based on warnings they then ignored.

Most phone companies do not allow harassment. What you should do first is call your phone service provider and ask their advice. I'm sure they can tell you the correct steps to take to get rid of the problem. If they find who is doing it they will probably get in trouble. :)
