hi,i know this is long, but you'll be helping innocent creatures instead of me. well today i went in to a pet shop that i have only ever been to once before. i never knew that they sold livestock, untill i heard biirds chirping for the first time. i went over and saw wide but short cages holding birds. first i saw somethings called a "rainbow pennat rosera" or something along those lines. it had a medium cage but was all puffed up, and it actually looked really dirty, like it had been rolling in dry dirt, and its feathers were all puffed up. i dont know if they are supposed to look like that as ive never seen (or heard of) that breef before. next i saw budgie, about 10 of them in 1 cage, it was maybe 3 feet wide and really short. next i saw about 5-8 cockatiels in the same type of cage. the bird would have hit its head on the top if the perch was any higher. i dont know if these are signs of a bad shop, but they seem pretty bad. is there anything i can do for these creatures who deserve a better home? my friend thought of a really crazy idea, where he records the birds on his phone and if they tell us not to record, they are hiding something. should we try it? also i thought i would add that there was a healthy looking green parrot on the counter, that was chirping away. do you think that they put the 1 healthy bird in a big cage at the front so people think its of high standards?

We had a pet store in my area that was much like that. It was called Get A Pet, but was referred to as Ghetto Pet by everyone. People only buy animals from places like that because they feel bad for the animals. But do not do that. The animal that you buy will only be replaced by an equally as unhealthy animal the next day. Don't buy anything from that pet store, even if it's not living.
If no one buys anything from them, then they will soon be out of business. If you want to do something about it then try to call a local animal shelter and ask for numbers to call about animal abuse.
Birds need height, not length. They need to be able to fly.
You can try the phone thing, but I'm sure from your description that this place has something to hide. Most pet stores do.. they're looking to make money, and do not care about the health of the animals they're selling. [ selectopaque's advice column | Ask selectopaque A Question ]

isis answered Wednesday August 30 2006, 2:56 pm: You could try contacting your local RSPCA branch, but they don't always act if there is 'evidence of food and water'. You could also contact your local council, they may be able to do something as licences have to be granted in order to sell livestock. Another option if these fail is to speak to a local wildlife organisation and newspaper. The paper might be interested in covering this if any of the others want to act on your information. If your friend is able to record evidence, this may help with any possible prosecution, as quite often, if the RSPCA decide to visit premises, they notify the shop first, this gives them time to clean up.
'Puffed up' birds are not well or happy and the cages should not be dirty. Budgies and cockatiels like company but the size of their cages sound far too small for that number.
It's an old trick to display a healthy bird to give the appearance of high standards. I would say most definitely try to do something about this, even if you're not successful, at least you will know you have tried.
Hope that helps and the best of luck to you. [ isis's advice column | Ask isis A Question ]
Nallie answered Thursday August 24 2006, 11:00 pm: Usually when a bird "puffs" his feathers and doesn't flatten them back out this is a sign that the bird is not well. Like any animal that is kept in a cage the cage should be big enough. If there is a Humane society in your area, call them if they can't help they will tell you where to call. If there is not one in your area call the State health department and they should be able to point you in the right direction. Perhaps with concerns of the bird flu they will respond anyway. I agree..they are showing off the healthy bird to make the shop appear better. [ Nallie's advice column | Ask Nallie A Question ]
xEVYx answered Thursday August 24 2006, 9:31 pm: There's people that you can report that to. You know when you see something wrong with a restaurant, or unheathly, well they can be closed down if something doesn't meet the regulations, so I'm pretty sure it could work for this place.
I would say they most definitly put it there on purpose. They want people to go in there and buy things. If there's an ugly sick bird in the front, are people really gonna wanna go in there? No. In a way it's pretty much false advertisement.
