Most likely he is really used to being held. What you need to do is put him down and not pick him back up. If he keeps crying for 5 minutes, then I would say pick him up. While he is on the ground, reassure him that you are there. Get down at his level and try to get him interested in a toy.

My one year old cousin is really used to being held by her mom, she cant even be put down without screaming. And she doesnt have the heart to just walk away and let her play.

Play peek a boo. Usually that makes my cousins giggle a lot.

Making funny noises is a good trick, too.

If all else fails, feed him some warm formula, and change his diaper, and put him to bed. Be sure to sing to him (even if you screech like a cat, babies usually like human voices) as he goes to sleep.

I hope this helps!

I would use b-mod (behavior modification). This is really easy for anyone to do. Basically you reward positive behavior. Start slow and for every 10 minutes he can sit and not cry reward him with something he loves (try not to use food). Then stretch the time over a week or so and eventually he will be calmer and able to be on his own.
He is probably missing him mom and going through seperation anxiety. Also if you have to let him cry for a bit thats ok sometimes even with my own child I let her cry as there is nothing I can do and she needs to find a way to settle herself (don't do this for longer then 10-15 min.). Talk to his mom and ask what works for her she may have a "trick" that settles him right down and asking will show the mom that you care about her child and want him to be happy.

Hope this helps.

omfg i was in your situation with a little 1 and 1/2 year old named taylor. she would cry her head off if i wasnt holding her. my arms got tired after a while but i looked for toys that she liked to settle her. a waffle also make her calm down. as his mom which o his toys are his favorite and what food he likes best.

Well if the only time he doesn't cry is while you are holding him maybe you could sit him on your lap and maybe use one arm to support him and rest one then switch arms you support him with and he will most likely stop crying. Hope I helped.
