dance!

Question Posted Wednesday August 2 2006, 2:52 am

ok so i have a passion for dancing. i loveee it. i love to be on stage. i love to perform. i've done sports all of my life and i'm about to be a senior and i've never taken a jazz/ballet class. i regret it a lot. i know if i had started dance earlier i could have gone so much further than where i went with sports. i feel so sad ..... like i wasted talent and spent time on things that took me no where.

i started taking hiphop classes....bc that requires no previous dance knowledge....just a little rythym........and a week later they made me a teacher at the studio.

i want to go far and try out for companies and go somewhere.i know i have the stage presence to do it. but every audition, application, or place wants jazz and ballet knowledge. i want to learn jazz and ballet fast and cheap but all of the classes are for 5 year olds and it takes years to learn all i need to know.

does anyone have any advice?!?!?! am i too late!

and if i did learn jazz and ballet where do i go from there?

how do i get noticed?!?! where do i start!?!

let me start by saying this.
im a teenager [younger than you]
and ive been dancing 11 years.
and i dance 10 hours a week
and im a competition dancer. [meanign i compete against other dance schools]
and i love it.
i do ballet/tap/jazz/broadway/lyrical/hip hop.

If you LOVE to dance.
you wouldn't mind dancing with 5 year olds to get technique. If you want to learn ballet & jazz fast don't do it for like 1 hour! You need to practice practice practice!
take advice from me, dancing isn't an easy sport. It takes time & commintment. Alot of commintment. You give up your personal life to dance. You want to dance. You need to be dedicated & you have to be ready for a challenge. Hip hop is nothing compared to ballet. In ballet your graceful. [thats the type i am] and in hip hop your getting low and shaking it.

I am not trying to make your self confidence go down. I just wanted you to face the truth.

Having stage prescence is awesome. Its worth a THOUSAND words. I bet you, you could learn the WHOLE technique process for just ballet - alone for 1 year.

This is what i suggest. Your never to late to dance. I know many people who dance at your age.

When you do learn jazz & ballet I would suggest maybe learning pointe when your teacher says you have strong ankles.
Right now, you don't have strong ankles. I know it for a fact.

Now, you need to work with a professional dance teacher. Who specilizes in ballet & jazz.
TIP - learn ballet first. learn the techniques because you will catch on to jazz quite fast afterwards.

Start by having a professional BALLET teacher teaching you the positions of ballet & the movements & etc. [they will know what their doing]

After you start improving. You can go to competitions & enter. [their not cheap. about a good 2000 dollars] and their on you start getting noticed. You get flyers in the mail & you get awards. Especially when your on your own. You get trophies. BIG ONES TOO! its fun! Dance is a great sport. You just have to be dedicated. & give up things you love for it. :D

Anyways, if you need more help. Please let me know.
:D

if you're a senior in high school, see if you can take jazz/ballet classes at a local college. you'll be the youngest in your class (but probably not the least experienced). you'll probably even meet some cool, new people. and you're sure to get the type of experience you want WITH the added bonus of college credits once you get there. if you're not a senior in high school then I'm really sorry, but I have a great feeling that you are.

That is so unusual that you can't find a beginning ballet or jazz class for adults. I got into a class when I was in my 30's. Keep calling around, I'm sure there is someone in your area that would teach that. You might also suggest to them that if they don't have a class now for adults they might think about it because they could sell it as an excellent workout program for adults to get in shape. I also found a few links below that you can self teach. One is for a video on Amazon and the other is a booklet you can print out with the different ballet moves. For jazz you can do what I just did and put in "How to learn Jazz dance on video" in your search engine and up will come some sites. when you scroll down to the bottom of the booklet I gave on the site for ballet you will see a Jazz book w/tapes if you want it. These sheets look like how they show the dancers how they want them to perform/kind of like reading music, which is probably why they want you to understand ballet and Jazz dance. You have to understand the moves they want you to make by reading them and/or hearing them. Good luck on your mission, I'm sure you will make it and do well.

If you are really serious about trying out for companies, I suggest you take that class with the 5 year olds. If you dont want to, maybe try talking to the director of the jazz and ballet classes. See if you can work something up. If you arent that serious about it, try searching classes around where you live, to take private lessons or if they're any classes your age. To answer your questions, No you are not too late. It just takes time to learn. You have to have paticence. After you learn Jazz and Ballet, search up some companies you would like to try out and see where they are located and if you are interested. you start by taking jazz and ballet classes, then you get noticed by showing your talents!

I hope I helped and you will achieve your dream!

i'd just take the classes anyway...if theyre 5 year olds nobody will make fun of you, and then you can go on doing your passion and furthering your goal. if you think its worth it than do it, than go for it. if its too much and you dont feel like it i guess theres nothing you can do except look for something else, which doesnt seem like you want to. maybe ask for private classes with a tutor?
