I'm Not Being Lazy!! I Truly Idolize Her!!!

Question Posted Tuesday July 18 2006, 3:55 pm

I'm writing a college essay on somebody "famous" that I feel to be Heroic. Out of curiosity, if you had to choose somebody to write about, who would you select?

I'm asking because I have chosen Helen Keller. She became an author, as well as a teacher to the deaf and blind, while overcoming those same disabilities. That is what I want to do with my life. I want to educate and assist the impaired, and I've known that since middle school. She is truly a hero in my eyes.

My worry is that Helen Keller will be such a popular choice. I'm scared that other students will be too lazy to search for a slightly less common name and just go with what they already know. I fear boring my teacher before she even commences the reading process. I know it's just one essay, but she is an inspiration of mine. I would be tremendously bummed if I had to write about someone else!!! Do you think my teacher will be bothered with the same old story, even if it were written immaculately? Do you feel it could possibly have a negative affect on my grade?

All input and opinions will be greatly appreciated.

Additional info, added Tuesday July 18 2006, 4:03 pm:
Oh, and also!! This is simply an English class. It has nothing to do with learning to teach the impaired. It's just a normal English essay on a "famous" and "Heroic" somebody. So if there are so many "heroic" folks out there, should I be this concerned that my choice might come across as common and simple?.

First of all the chioce may look cliche' to your teacher but if it's who you want ot do it on i say go for it. just make it stand out. ask your teacher if it has to be a typical essay...after all she wasn't a typical woman. be artistic. start off with a poem about how she is an inspiration to you. or begin it with a story through the mind of hellen keller. also you may want to note before it "my essay is on a true inspiration to me, hellen keller, my idol. i chose this woman because of the opstacles she overcame and all that she accomplished despite her dissabilaties. i look up to her and did not simply write the essay becuase she is famous and a common hero and it would be easy. let's not forget she is famous and a common hero for a reason...and that's why i chose her. so please enjoy the essay."

You could pick someone you have never really heard of and do a report on them. On your own you could do a report about helen keller and ask your teacher to grade it too, if you want. She/He might even give extra credit for it. There are probably other people that you will find very heroic and have never really heard anything about them. I hope i helped~

I think that by stating in the beginning of your essay that you admire Helen Keller and that she has inspired you to become a teacher with the intellectually / physically impaired persons and then going into explain all of her accomplishments and how much adversity she overcame will show your teacher that this was not a random choice and that you thought this out. Also that she is a true hero to you.

Any teacher worth her paycheck will see your passion and as long as its well written will grade you accordingly.

Hope this helped. Good Luck.

p.s. as someone who has worked and still works from time to time with people who have impairments it is truly some of the most rewarding work ever!

Your probably right about a lot people picking Helen Keller for their essay but if you truly idolize Helen Keller and you show that in your essay than I doubt your teacher wil be bored with it. If the writing is amazing and your passionate about it then it will be a good essay. You shouldnt worry about other peoples essays. Just concentrate on making yours the best it can be and it will be.

I wouldnt have chosen Helen Keller, but I can see how a lot of people would. Obviously you want this essay to be really good, and you'll probably write your best while writing about a topic you're really passionate about. There is a chance your teacher would think its boring if she had to read a lot of Helen Keller essays, but think of the ratio of between people in your class to all the heroic people in the world...there are so many options of people to write about that there might only be 1 or 2 other people writing about Helen Keller. Your teacher isnt even going to be focusing on the information as much as the grammar you use and such, so I say, go for writing about Helen Keller and include how much she's inspired you...teachers like inspired students lOl
