the first time i went to overnight camp i was nervous about all the things you are too. but once you get there, all the fear will go away, dont worry. and making friends is realy easy, just dont be shy! start a conversation and be nice and youll have friends in no time. most camps dont let you use cell phones, but im not sure about the one your going to. but youll be so busy you wont even think about cell phones, trust me. im not sure about straightenng your hair. well i do it like everyday too, but at camp im in the water a lot so i just throw it up. i would bring your straightener though. when i go, usually at leaste one day i straighten my hair so you can try it one day. but hm..things to bring...well i wouldnt bring nice clothes, or well just make sure you bring clothes you wont mind getting dirty/destroyed. ha. oh and of course sweatshirts and pants in case it gets cold along with normal summer clothes. dont be afraid of overpacking ha. and obviously tennis shoes and sandals too..but basically just bring everything you would take that you would take on vacation, along with a flashlight, camera, bugspray/sunscreen, uhm..oh and when you take a shower, make sure you wear flip flops in it cuz the tile gets dirty. uhmm yeah i think tahts it! have fun at camp and if you need anything else, dont hesitate to ask! <3amy

I have...bad situations at sleep away camps. But I went 2 a boyscout camp, an old friend of mine used to go to sleep away camps all the time, she loved them. I don't think the camp will let you straighten your hair but if you wake up early enough, you can sneak it. Or, you can always do it when you have extra time. And the cell phone, I don't think that's suppossed to be used and bringing it may be a bad idea. They will let you write letters home though. And don't worry bout mking friends, you'll make plenty. Have fun!!!!

i was nervous the 1st time i went to my camp too! i go to this camp called lakeshore and i absolutely love it! i think you'll love the experience of camp cause it is a get away from home and you are always busy and you leave with so many new memories and friends. anyways, most camps will say not to bring cell phones but everyone does anyways! i also straighten my hair and if the camp youre going to has electrical plugs in the cabin, you can straighten it there anytime you want!! thats what i do! as for meeting friends...meeting friends at camp actually comes very naturally! once you get there and meet the girls in your cabin, the counselors will have everyone talk and introduce themselves..and usually everyones so friendly that the whole cabin just kinda clicks and has a great time together! and when youre walking around the camp..you can just approach people and smile and be friendly and most likely you'll meet alot of people, cause that makes camp as great as it is! its normal to be nervous..but going to camp is always amazing and once you get there you'll feel comfortable and ready to have fun. the person below me already explained what to bring. i suggest bringing your ipod if you have one..it makes cabin-time funner! k wow long answer hope i helped!

Moop answered Thursday July 13 2006, 2:53 am:
cell phones and other electronics depend on the camp. I would attempt to take them. if they're taken away you can always get them back after camp. trust me, you won't miss them. use common sense more than anything. flashlights, radios with headphones, watches make sense. other things can be considered more frivilous than useful to camp leaders. be prepared to back everything you bring up with reasons why you need them.

absolutely essential items (no matter which camp you go to):

bathing suit (2)
water bottle (I suggest a nalgene bottle, but any will do)
something small and quiet to do during breaks (like knitting or a book or cards)
stationary and stamps
change to call home if allowed by pay phone
sleeping bag and a set of sheets for a twin bed. (depending on the camp [and weather conditions] you may need both of them. the last camp I went to [two years ago] we had a tornado during. I only had sheets so I ended up wrapping myself in them and my blanket and running through the rain across the camp. I would have KILLED for a sleeping bag. everything would've been easier. take at least one sheet because camp mattresses are often the worst mattresses ever. and usually covered in vinyl.)
two pillows. alternate which one touches the mattress.
flip flops for the shower. even if it's pretty clean, there could be uncomfortable mats on the floor.
bathrobe even if you don't normally use one.
theme-appropriate items. most camps have weekly themes. if it's water week you can take more bathing suits. if you're going to a horse camp then take your helmet and appropriate shoes.
things to decorate your bunk space. posters. pictures. tape. push-pins. etc.

a whistle. always wear it. you never know when you'll need someone.

advice on meeting friends:

the first few hours will be pretty quiet. you'll find a few people who either regularly attend every single week of the camp or have been to previous camps. they'll know all of the other regulars and will be sitting around comparing the rest of their year. it's very helpful to be on good terms with these people because they'll introduce you to everyone else. the camp couselors will usually arrange getting-to-know-you games that will also help. you'll probably wear nametags as well. try and pick two or three people very early on that you want to know better and sit with them at the first meal.

also about meals, make sure you try a bit of everything every day. you can always go back and get more if you enjoy it and it's less wasteful to throw away a little instead of a lot. don't eat more than you normally do or you'll get sick, but don't skip any meals either. if you absolutely cannot eat anything, every camp has a back-up meal. it's usually peanut butter and jelly in some format. don't be shy about asking the cooks early on. it'll come in handy at least once.

camp is about learning to go without conveniences and trying new things. don't be afraid to do either.

yeah camps normally let people use their cell phones as long as its during the 'free time'. What kind of camp are you going to? If the camp you go to has plugs where you can plug in your straightener and if you get up early enough to use it, you can probably straighten your hair like usual.

On making friends, it's easiest to do with room mates and just be friendly and talk to everyone. chances are no one at the camp knows who you are so you can be yourself or make a new impression! But camps are suppose to be fun so dont be too nervous :)

essential to bring... SNACK/JUNK FOOD! in case you get hungry or the camp food sucks :P and probably other stuff too, oh well.
