Lord of the Flies, Oedipus, Antigone, Crime and Punishment, All Quiet on the Western Front, Grapes of Wrath, Macbeth, Boy's Life. All excellent books that are at a high school reading level and above. I would also like to applaud you on your efforts for wanting to gain knowledge, dang I wish I was like that haha.
hope this helps- :) ]
i LOVED crime and punishment, the da vinci code, catch-22. all of those will build your knowledge and make you think. crime and punishment might be a little hard to read but it is an amazing book and one of the best i've read in a long time. if you're into art and stuff you would like the da vinci code, and catch-22 is a hilarious satirical novel about the stupidity of war. C&P and catch-22 both have a lot of knowledge in them and you will def be smarter for reading them.
darkness at noon is really good too, but its out of print so you have to go to amazon to get it. ]
You could always try the 'for dummies' series, or the 'teach yourself' series. They are very good and easy to understand.

Unfortunately, any books that will help you build knowledge generally WILL be hard-going-need-a-dictionary-to-get-me-through-this type thing!
However, if you don't want to start with Shakespeare, then I would recommend one of the following:
Catcher In The Rye
Wuthering Heights
Emma
Jane Eyre
To Kill A Mockingbiard ]
