Abortions

Question Posted Sunday June 25 2006, 4:51 pm

If a pregnant woman is killed, it's considered a double homicide then why are abortions looked upon differently? I've heard things like when a pregnant woman is killed, it wasn't her choice but it is her choice in the case of an abortion. But, she isn't killing herself when it comes to abortions; she's doing it to another, developing human being. So that just doesn't make sense to me.

Abortion is a very complex issue and one that has been strongly debated for a long time by a combination of Pro-Life and Pro-Choice supporters.

I won't say what my opinion on this is, as I don't think you need to know that.

However, to answer your question, the main reason that abortion is not legally considered murder is that scientific research has shown that the foetus is not actually considered a living human form, as at that stage the development is not very far. Of course, there are arguments that the foetus is still alive and termination of that life constitutes murder. That being said, for every opinion one person has regarding this issue, there is another to counter it.

Technically, yes the life is a developing human being but because it has not developed to a stage where it could be considered (scientifically speaking) as more than a foetus, it is not considered murder.

First of all the person who just DIDN'T answer this question is very biased, and like I said didn't answer the question.

Now then, whether or not it counts as a double homocide is irrelevent. The mother who is allegedly responsible is dead. Therefore no-one is charged with murder. But in any case I don't believe that would count as a double homocide anyway since, like you said, she's killing another developing human being not herself.

Well in my opinion weather it doesnt matter if when you have an abortion you are killing or not, it is still wrong to me. That child had the chance to live and after the abortion it doesn't. Theres alot of hard choices some people have to make though, for example if a women is raped and pregnant. I think abortion is wrong, that is just my opnion and I had to say it.

You know, you can't just rate things low just because they don't agree with your point of view. Thats called being biased, and it's against the law.

I think it's choice. Legally, a person doesn't exist to the government until a birth certificate is filed for said person, so no lawsuit can be filed for that baby. There is no documentation of the unborn child even existing, so i'm not sure how they even sue that way.
I'm not trying to be heartless or anything, its just that I just realized that, and it makes just as little sense to me as your original question does to you.

I agree totally! I think that everyone should have one shot at life, and when a woman gets an abortion, you are causing someone not to enjoy the things that we have. For instance, what if Ronald Regan was aborted. A lot of things today would be completely different! But, I think abortion is wrong and it is murder!

To some of the previous posts:

We are not trying to start a debate on our own beliefs ( which is a bad idea ) or sway the person who had this question.

To whomever asked the question(remember this is my opinion and point of view):

Why is abortion not considered a murder or homicide? Easy, its cause some scientists in some lab detirmined at a certain point of the pregnancy the developing fetus is part of the host body and then after that point it is no longer considered a part of the womans body; its living on its own. I do believe if a pregnant woman was killed she would also have to be beyond the stage for abortion. The government has many standards for many things, even life!

I would like to note that nowhere in here is my standpoint on abortion.

I agree. I think that it should be considered "killing" from the moment the baby is fertilized. I don't think it's right for a mother to legally take the life from her own baby as long as it's young enough. If anyone is trying to reason their way into abortion, I want to ask them what their heart says about it.

abortions are just wrong, no matter how you look at it. a woman at my grandmothers church was 9 months pregnant- due in just a few days before she was murdered in her indiana home. i vaguely knew her- but i know that my condolences go out to her every day. so, i believe that abortions are looked at not even in a similar way. i guess thats why the question was so confusing to me at first. abortions ARE murder- no matter what anybody says. if you were irresponsible enoughto make that child- then you should be responsible enough to have that child. even if you put it up for adoption once its born- but killing it- thats jsut unneccesary. believ me- if i had any power over it- i would make abortions highly illegal-but there is only so much we as citizens can do to change our screwed up government.

just_ask_me answered Sunday June 25 2006, 6:18 pm:
Abortion is not murder. Abortion occurs around the first 3 months of pregnancy. It's not even a living, breathing baby yet. It is a fetus, which is not alive. After 4 months, it becomes a living, breathing, developing human being. The double homicide thing is understandable, since was no choice in the matter for the mother.

Notso answered Sunday June 25 2006, 5:12 pm:
Generally in the case of pregnant women who are killed- they want to have the baby. Laci Peterson is a good example, she was eight months along, had her baby named, was excited etc. The baby could have easily lived had Laci gone into labour at the point.

While I'm not sure how far a long a woman must be in pregnacny during her death for it to be considered a homicide, I assume there should be a considerable difference between a woman who is two weeks pregnant, and one who is thirty two weeks.

People differ on whether or not abortion is killing a human. However it isn't legal to abort a baby that could be viable outside the womb. Many people differ on when a fetus can be considered a human being. Some may say birth, others six months, and other conception. As it lies, abortion is legal. No one is forcing you to have one, so if you think it's killing a human being, let those people deal with it in whatever afterlife you believe exists.
