Hey- to assess if a company is running a "scam", call and ask them one thing- will they take everybody, or just the people with a legitimate chance at "making it". They won't always give you a straight answer, so you may have to be tricky: "Hi, me and a group of my friends were thinking of getting into modeling. Will you represent all of us? Cause I don't want to do it unless we all do it." If they say you can all take classes but they can't guarantee that they'll represent all of you, they are probably reputable. If they say Sure, we represent anybody who wants to get into modeling, then you may want to move on. You need an agency who will give you an HONEST assessment of your chances, not just one who tells you what you want to hear.

As far as pictures: when you first meet with a modeling agency, they usually DON'T want professional shots, just a few snapshots. They will tell you what to do from there. My recommendation: DO NOT sign up for anything at your first meeting. Walk away, think about it, go with your gut feeling. Ask yourself if you will be happy even if you never get any work from it.

Dear Friend,

Signing with a modelling agency is the best way for you to find work. A reputable company will organise a shoot, and prices will vary depending on the organisation. I'm sure you'll be able to use your judgement to determine whether something is a scam - investigate everything thoroughly, and ask for recommendations from past company models. If your place of choice has nothing to hide, they'll be more than happy to provide you with contacts.

Acting classes are a must if you'd like to break into the industry. Getting an agent without skills would be useless - you'll be wasting time and money searching for and employing one. Enrol in a course, be comfortable with your surroundings, and when you're happy with your skill-level, find a rep.

An acting agent will require a portfolio as well - you'll most likely be able to use the same photos the modelling agency takes, so order doubles.

Love,

Ainsley.

ok well if you arent 5'9" there isnt any true way to becone a supermodel or anything but u can still model or at least try. i am 5'5" and i signed with and agency. the way i got started was that there was a stand in my mall. i signed up and went to a few classes and they signed me! i have yet to get an actual audition or watever but i got a bunch of pics taken and they set it up and everything. it costs quite a but but if u actaully get work, it should easily pay for its self. and the agency i signed with also gives auditions for acting and stuff. i hope this helped you

To get started in acting/modeling you do have to have a portfolio and you do have to pay for that which usually runs somewhere around $1000 or so depending upon the experience of the photographer in the feilds you want to enter. You simply have to hunt around for someone who has credentials in the areas that you want to work in and they will know the standard shots that you will need. Models do need to be at least 5'9" tall and that is a must. I knew this girl in New York who was absolutely stunningly beautiful, but she was 5'8" and no one would take her. What you should never have to pay for is the talent agency, modeling agency or agent. Anyone who tells you that for X amount of dollars they will get you started in the business is taking you for a ride. A true Agency/Agent will be taking a percentage of what you are being paid. I don't think you need an agent until you are signed by a modeling agency if that is the direction you are going and you can get away w/not having an agent in the acting feild if you know how to find out where the casting calls are being held. There are certain trade magazines and books you can get that give you the information you need. In California there are actors trade books that give you info on all of the movie companies and how to contact them. I have signed up w/a talent agency before and there was no money out of my pocket and they did take their own shots of me for thier books. But, these shots are only head shots and don't show a wide spectrum of looks you need to show sometimes and if someone wants you for a movie or play they may request your portfolio shots which the agency does not have. Once you are casted in moderate or big part in a movie you will be directed by the movie/theater company or agency to some highly recommended agents with good reputations, but if you are casted as an extra then you won't need one. I wish you all the best of luck and hope that your dreams will come true. Just don't let others cloud your dreams w/their negativity.

Namaste!

How tall are you?

If you aren't at least 5'9'', then kiss your famous modelling career goodbye. All runway models are pretty much that tall and a size 0 or 2. There are a couple of exceptions, of course, but this is for the most part.

You should never, ever, ever pay for a portfolio. Your agent should cover that. It's a scam if they ask for money up front.

Acting is a very tough business. Most casting calls are in Burbank, California for TV shows, and everywhere across the globe for movies. You have to have an agent. They get you casting calls. You will be turned away if you just show up.

Agents are thousands upon thousands of dollars/year.

Acting classes might help, but most people are born with natural talent. you can usually tell who is natural and who's had coaching.

High school drama is a looooot different from real-world acting. Just so you know.

Anything that asks for money up front is a scam.

Get references, and good luck.
