Hey im trying to write my own songs and i just cant seem to get the "flow" going. And i dont know what to write songs about. I cant get a rhythm of the song either. Or beat even. I know it sounds pathetic but i have no idea where to start! Please help!! I'll rate 5's!!!
The best time to write is usually when you're in the moment. I've written about boys, parents, other drama, teenage shallowosity, everything. But it only works while you're experiencing it, or at least it's that way for me.

And once you feel it you'll know. Start off with something simple and write about something thats going on in your life. Like i said - I don't write songs. But sometimes i do get beats and stuff off of one song and get something different that's pretty cool.
fLiPfLoPs25 answered Monday June 12 2006, 9:55 pm: I know what you mean. I write songs too. This is my strategy. First I think of something to write about. Something that I have been through or experienced that was tough or meaningful. Then I write. I first kind of make a poem, letting the words fly from me. Then once I finish writing it, I sing it to myself, experementing with all kinds of different beats, rhytyms, and tunes. Then I sing it again with the rhythym I picked out and see if I like it. Then I have a song.
Hope I helped.

Jenn_2 answered Sunday June 11 2006, 4:25 pm: Instead of writing down rythems and beats and phrases. i'd start to write a poem about how you feel. Write about how you feel about life, and the world, and what you'd wish to do to change it. After you have a good poem, add all of the technical music stuff like a tune and such. Remember to make a chorus that stands out and a bridge. Hope this helps! [ Jenn_2's advice column | Ask Jenn_2 A Question ]

Try imitating someone first. Get you feet wet by trying to sound like someone else. I kind of did it with Weezer for a while and I started to notice little intricacies of songwriting and soloing in specific keys. And with these in mind I learned other groups songs, and amassed a little more knowledge. Throughout all this I was writing little licks and progressions, and recording all of them on a tape recorder (Do it. Just do it. Record or write down any riffs or melodies you think you might want to use, otherwise you'll forget.)
I had always really liked my lyrics, but finally I just started nailing it. My problem was the melody- it never flowed right, just like you said. After observing how others had done it I can of started to get a little bit of an instinct for it and my songs started to work. And they improved pretty damn fast.
There isn't one correct way to write a song. There are super-personal songs, like Iris for example, and then you've got something like "Give ti Away" by the RHCP that isn't really about much, it just flows like a mofo and rocks. Try everything and see what you feel comfortable doing. I've always thought that you can't force songwriting. You can't just conjure meaningful lyrics out of nowhere, you have to feel them, or have a cohesive concept behind the song. It can be tough. And remember, 90% of writing is revision.
jumadel answered Friday June 9 2006, 11:03 pm: Hi, there are quite a number of beats you could get out of some songs. Maybe think of a tropical carribean beat or a wrap beat, or something with musical instruments in it. I would'nt suggest copying any one elses beat or song. Daniel. secretsdontmakefriends answered Friday June 9 2006, 8:35 pm: good for you. i also love music and i know what it islike trying to write but just cant think of anything. the best place to start is to write about things that are important to you. and this can also help with making you feel better. next time a friend gets mad at you or something goes wrong dont worry about it, just write it down. pour your heart and soul into everything you write. a dictionary can aslo help. i have a hard time spelling but it can help you use diffrent words like in stead of using the word pain over and over again you can try to use other words like hurt, anguish (i told you i cant spell. this will help with making your song easy to listen to and poetic. try to find mediphors for things as well. if that doesnt work for you, you can try writing poetry. this is easier and you can take your poems and turn them into lyrics later. cant get that tune or beat? dont worry you can try experementing with instraments or copy some from a band of song you like and change it up. if nothing eles works, dont worry something will hit you, just like when something happens to you and a song about that pops into your head. the most important thing is to keep cool. writing songs isnt for everyone and can be very hard. if nothing comes to you, take a break and try again later. life is hard so im sure something will come to you. good luck! crack_is_wack answered Friday June 9 2006, 8:07 pm: One thing to do is listen to your favorite music, and try to get inspired- by the lyrics or the tune. As the person before me said, having a piano or GarageBand really does help with the music part.
As for what to write about, just write about your life. Write about your friendships, write about your love life, write about who you are; you can even write about feeling like there's nothing in your life worth writing about (I did something like that, and I'm actually quite proud of how it turned out). And what you write doesn't even have to be autobiographical- you can write about something that happened to friend, or even something totally made up.
I know how it feels to have writer's block. I think the trick is to just make yourself keep writing, even though it's tempting to just give up and watch T.V. instead.
Good luck, and I'm sure you'll write some awesome songs!
countrygirl6571 answered Friday June 9 2006, 7:25 pm: Try writing about stuff that happens to you, what you see, love life, anything you knwo anything about! Try going to an online site that has words that rhyme to get that "flow" you want. Also, if you have a piano or Garage Band on an Apple computer, that can really give you a good beat!
