Ask yourself what makes me scared about using them for the first time? Then talk to your friends, mother, older sibling, relative or person you trust about it. Once they put you at ease things will be easier for you. I think if you address your fears first and then try to use them you'll be A-okay. Otherwise fear works against you making it hard as you'll psych yourself out.
It helps to have one foot on the ground and the other on the toilet for insertion. You could also use KY Jelly to ease insertion. Have a read of this article as it should help and definitely talk to your friends about their first experiences with this.
Also, if you have a handheld mirror it may help figure out where everything is and how to insert it properly. You could also have a friend instruct you through the bathroom door or a parent or someone close in the same room depending on comfort zone. Either way, if you get rid of the fear you'll be fine.
ItaSasuXNinja answered Monday July 28 2008, 7:56 pm: From what I have heard, tampons are bad. They can clog the blood inside you, not to scare you. I still use pads. Pads are much better, sure uncomfortable, but better. I like pads. I recommand them, but then again, it is your opinion. I have a few friends who use tampons, but mostly pads. ^^ Hope this helped a tad bit. [ ItaSasuXNinja's advice column | Ask ItaSasuXNinja A Question ]
LiLMAMAx answered Monday July 28 2008, 7:56 pm: I like tampons a LOT better than pads. Their easy to use & you can't even feel them like you can pads. I'd recommend TAMPAX PEARL. Their comfortable to put in, unlike the cardboard ones - OUCH! If you have a woman such as a mother or guardian that you feel comfortable with, talk to her about it. There isn't anything to be scared about, their pain free! It's okay to be nervous but in the end, their really worth it! ♥ [ LiLMAMAx's advice column | Ask LiLMAMAx A Question ]

when i first got my period, i used tampons the first day.
i find it way easier, because to me it's more comfortable then wearing a pad and feeling it come out.
try to use tampax and try using the plastic. they are much more comfortable. if you are going to wear them, wear liner on your underwear just in case
hope i helped

stargirl51 answered Monday July 28 2008, 7:29 pm: A good tampon to start with would be the tampax or those rounded plastic tampons.
Best thing to do if you're a first time user is to read through the instructions carefully in the privacy and comfort of your own bathroom. And take a deep breath to relax yourself.
