Question Posted Sunday April 23 2006, 10:25 pm

I know this sounds incredibly stupid, but I am terrified of spiders! Everytime I see one near me, or even up in the wall in my room, I freak. I know this is considered a phobia, but as far as illnesses go...? I feel like when I see one they're on me all over and I have to get it off. Is there anything I can do about this?

Phobias can be very serious, enough to disrupt your life. There is a therapy known as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Do a google search on it and you may think that this is something that you want to try.

I wouldn't really class Arachnaphobia (definitely what you have!) as a mental illness but it certainly is a problem to every day life because, as much as we hate to accept it (I also hate spiders) they are and always will be all around us!

There are different ways you can learn to cope with your fear and the sooner you start trying, the easier it is likely to be.

You could try exposure therapy, where you make yourself look at pictures of spiders, then look at real spiders and so on as much as possible until you get used to seeing them. You might still be scared but you will learn to deal with it and it won't be so hard to be faced with them any more.

You could try hypnotherapy, as long as you make sure you use a therapist with qualifications and ask to see these qualifications beforehand.

Just make sure that before you embark upon any sort of therapy, you're absoloutely sure you want to face it because exposure therapy in particular is REALLY hard and you have to really want to get over it to do it.

I know exactly how you feel! I get the same exact reaction with Spiders as well. They are terrifying, yes. But in your case, it sounds like it is not a phobia - just a minor fear of them. With a Phobia you got to ask yourself, "Is this affecting my every-day life?" or "Does it affect me so much that I have to be far away with them or I'll have a panic attack?" Because that's the symptoms of a Phobia. If you do not get those symptoms, then you probably just have a big fear of them. If you do, try to see a Doctor about it. He/she may offer medication or other options to treat the Phobia.

Yeah, a lot of people hate them. Fear is usually caused by either pesonal experiences, or ignorance. The best way to overcome a fear such as this one is to learn about them. Learn why they're dangerous, which ones are dangerous and which ones are common. Next time you see one, learn about it, do as the other person said and try and get a chance to hold one. At first you may need to just get close to it, maybe pet it.

Remember, the spider isn't there to hurt you, it's not even worried about you. You need to learn why it bites when it does, you'll learn to prevent it. Same goes with most animals/insects. They usually don't want to harm you without any good reason.

This phobia is completely normal, there are tons of people who hate spiders and I am still one of them.

When I was younger, I was scared to the point of not even being able to kill them with something, but now I know that they are more than ten times smaller than me.

Try keeping a can of bug spray or just kill it with something even though it seems really hard for you. When you start getting used to being able to kill them, you'll feel in control and not as scared when you see one.

I am of the opinion that to get rid of phobias is to face them head on! You might try visiting a pet store and holding a spider to help overcome that fear.

I have heard that some people achieve success in overcoming phobias with hypnosis.

My mom used to tell me.."they are more afraid of you than you are them"
