Housing...

Question Posted Wednesday April 19 2006, 2:38 am

I've finally decided where to go to college next year. I cancelled the housing/dorm form since I figured I could live with my sister in her apartment right by the school. I thought this would be great since the dorms at the school are notoriously crazy and that's not me at all.

Yet, now I'm having second thoughts. I already have a boyfriend, so I'm not worried about finding a 'hot guy' to hook up with or anything, but asside from classes, will I meet as many people? Would I be missing out on basic college experiences if I don't live in a dorm?

i really think you should live in a dorm. Not only will u get the experiance of meeting new people, but you'll see how it is to live away from family and if you live in a dorm, you're surrounded by a bunch of people going thru the same college experiance as you. you'll have more support for the things you may be nervous about, like classes, parties, exams and such because everyone will be going thru the same thing. Some colleges requie freshmen to live on campus. i'm guessing your college doesn't....but there is a reason why its sometimes required. You're going to be nervous and scared when you go to school in the fall and being on campus lets you get more involved and meet new people fast. even if you're not rowdy, go for living on campus. if you decide you don't like it, you can probably move after one semester or the next year. But remmeber, dorms are a good way to learn what its like to be on your own without being totally by yourself. If your sister was there, she'd be taking care of you. so good luck and have fun at college!

I'm currently finishing out my first year in my residence at university and it's been amazing! I know it's a little rowdy at times, but it gives you a chance to meet a lot of new people, make a ton of friends, and live with people who are taking the same courses as you, so they can help you out with any difficulties.

I have friends who stayed off-campus this past year, and they've said to me that they wish they had stayed in residence their first year.

I would definitely suggest living on-campus if you like to live in a very social environment.

hey, living in a dorm is one of the biggest parts in college. it allows you to be social with rommates and other people livng around you. there are pros and cons of living in a dorm. if you move in with your sister you wont have as many new friends. you may have a few but not as much as you would have if you lived in a dorm. so i would go with living in the dorm! ps. dorms might be wild and crazy but you dont have to participate in those crazy things! cait♥

well, i can't say i've been through the entire college experience per se (y'know, still having a few more weeks of high school to go and whatnot), but most people i know that have gone through college say that living in the dorms is a fairly big part. i don't think the social reasons are the biggest, but. well wait.

*social aspect (meeting and living around/with other people): 30%
*learning to live on your own (take care of all/most of your food, bathing, cleaning, housekeeping, waking-up-on-time, doing-your-homework-without-your- parents-nagging-you, etc. needs): 50%
*living with people your own age, meeting like-minded people, makes it more conducive for the learning environment: 20%

that's all the time i have for now. if you decide to go ahead and live with your sister, have fun. ^_^ or if you're able to get into the dorms, maybe next semester, best wishes, oh, and definitely have fun with that!

I will try my best to help you on this one, but this seems like a hard answer. Some colleges do require you to live in a dorm for the first year or two. Will you meet a few people if you weren't living in a dorm? The answer to that is that you would have to decide that for yourself. You could always visit other dorm rooms if you would like to as well. You should still be able to do college activites even if you didn't have a dorm. You should make sure though that your sister would let you live in her apartment though. Any other questions, you can e-mail me at pcdoctor2@cashette.com Hopes this helps somewhat.
