my dog eats everything ok my dog eats absoloutley anything he can get his paws on-napkins, rocks, rubberbands, twist ties, you name it he'll eat it. Is this abnormal for dogs? is there a way we can train him not to do this? Does he even know what hes eating could be harmful to him? thanks ♥

You're dog is probably some sort of retriever, since labs especially are known to be voracious eaters. In that case it's completly normal for him to be doing it. They also have no idea of the harm it could cause them, and they rarely ever learn, so you'll always have to moniter him. ]
sprinkle chili powder on the things he likes to chew. it's perfectly normal for dogs to chew things, you just need to stop it before he chews through a wire or something. ]
dont panic its ok. most dogs do this.no they dont know its bad for them or good for them. they just know thats its fun to eat it. there are many ways to stop this. the first is that when he starts to eat it then make alot nose to scare it then he will soon put two and two together and stop eating it. or you can put something groos one the stuff so that when he its he'll think its groos and stop. i hope i helped.

No, your dog does not know the dangers of what he is ingesting. Not all dogs do this, although I would not call this abnormal behavior. However, until this is resolved your dog should not be left unsupervised. Use a kennel or a room with baby gates to confine your dog to a small area without these dangers. When you see your dog pick up something immediatly say "drop it" and of course he probably won't, so remove it from his mouth at the time you give the command. Immediatly reward him with petting and a lot of praise when you do retrieve the object.
Eventually he will learn the "drop it" command if you are consistant.
Some experts in canine behavior think this problem stems from frustration..he is probably a high energy dog without enough exercise. Exercise your dog by taking him for a 45 minute walk daily.
I know it seems logical to give him free access to safe toys and treats to chew on, but it's not the best thing to do. Give him the appropiate things when you decide he can have them, not when ever he wants. You don't want to give him the idea that he should be able to automatically take anything that is availabe into his mouth.
Best of luck..and if it makes you feel any better I am going through the same thing with a dog I am training. He has finally learned the drop it command, and with the exercise he is getting much better. ]
No it's not abnormal at all!! Cats and dogs, especially when they are young, will eat anything and everything they can!! They don't really understand that it might not be good for them because most of the time they are playing with it and accidentally swallow it. One of our cats had to have an operation once and they removed elastic bands, sellotape, paper clips and strong from her stomach!!
There's not always a lot you can do, besides making sure that you leave nothing small and potentially edible lying about. Also, whenever he tries to eat something he shouldn't, clearly say "NO!" loudly and give him a slight slap on the side or clap close to his ears. This shouldn't be enough to hurt him but enough to just surprise him. If you continue to do this whenever he tries to eat something he shouldn't, he should eventually get the idea and stop doing it.
Also bear in mind that the majority of pets do grow out of this stage so in a year or so, he probably won't still do it. ]
It is probably a mix between instinct and curiosity, which means he probably does not know it is harmful to him, unless he feels pain.
But since it is instinctful, you can train him to not eat just whatever. To do so you would have to take some of the most common items he eats and put something repulsive on them. Say a bad taste or smell. When he goes to eat them..he will expierence the bad sensation and should back away.
It is subliminal training. After several times doing this he will begin to assosciate the object with the bad sensation, and therefore avoid eating it. This is common psychological training to do, and if all works well it will work.
Perhaps also you could talk to your veterinarian and see what he reckomends.
I hope I helped. And I hope your dog stops eating all that rotten stuff!

this stuff could actually be harmful to him. and you can train him. take it away and say NO firmly and loud but not to loud about 3 times. everytime he does it. until he stops. if that doesnt work you can also purchase some products to put on the objects he eats and he will leave it alone either by the smell or the taste.
and my personal advice.. you can try the bitter apple spray. but some dogs like the taste and smell of it. it didnt work on mine. ]
