While it could be related to temperature (valid point), there could be a few other factors.
Bettas have gotten a few popularity boosts in the last few years and that's increased the faulty information along with true facts about them.
First, don't try to give a lot of food. Just a pinch of pellets at each feeding and let the betta get to it at it's own timing (if you stand too close, the betta might be distracted from eating). Pay attention to how much food is left on the bottom after an hour instead of immediately. I've had a few betta that only became interested in food while it was sinking or had been on the bottom.
As to cleaning, you need to absolutely make sure the water is chlorine and soap free. Don't let soap get anywhere near inside the tank/bowl, no matter how well you think you can clean it out. Chlorine/chloramine neutralizers can be bought from pet shops.
Also, consider the age of the fish. You probably don't know for sure, but only a few bettas get to 5yrs. If you bought an older fish to start with, you'll likely see the effects of aging sooner.
If you cannot figure out at all what's causing the issue, take a sample of your water in a clean container to a pet shop and have them test it, they might be able help you figure out how to fix things knowing more of the story. ]
Okay, don't keep cleaning the cage because they want to feel comforted. Bettas do this alot. Mine do as well. Offer food daily, some bettas just like different kinds of food, like pellets, or blood worms, so offer different types. And when you find one it like keep feeding the type of food preferd. ]
Poor little guy, maybe he's depressed?
Anyways, get some LIVE blood worms and try feeding those to him. All fish that can eat WILL eat live blood worms. ]
He may be having trouble digesting his food if the room is cooler than 76 degrees Fahrenheit. Bettas are tropical, so they need 76 to 85 all the time in order for their bodies to function properly. Don't allow temperatures to quickly fluctuate more than a degree or two, as this will cause undue stress to the betta. If you put a light on him it will warm his water and help quite a bit. Keep it on 24 hours a day so it stays warm all the time. Change his water at least once a week. Be sure the new water is the same temperature as the old water and use a water conditioner. When feeding your betta it is wise to give them a variety of different foods. A staple food such as betta bites, betta bio-gold, or betta min should be fed on a daily basis once or twice day and only 5 or 6 pellets at a time. However, some bettas love variety, and can be fed freeze dried or frozen bloodworms, baby brine shrimp, or live foods such as mosquito larvae 2 or 3 times a week. Some often refuse to eat anything but live food. They are best feed live fish or live black worms. Black worms are often an appreciated food and can be a good choice to use when trying to teach these fish to learn to eat frozen food. It is important to give them a varied diet and they can be very slow eaters. Bettas are also nocturnal, so he may be eating at night and you don't see it. They love darkness and places to hide because in their natural habitat they live in caves. I wish you luck with your betta.
Namaste!
