Question Posted Wednesday February 8 2006, 8:56 am
I am currently 17 years old.. 6 foot 3. But I have a awkard voice that makes me sound younger and smaller then I actually am.
Is there any way I can retrain my voice? By making it deeper and more normal.. right now I cannot stand listening to my voice when it is recorded.

Thief answered Saturday February 11 2006, 5:12 am: well listen to me youngling. im 19 and i look like im 17, and my voice sounds younger too. As for normal, there's no such thing as normal. Normal is defined to be as what the majority thinks, but is it realy? or is normal a non-exsistant word made for those with no independance to fallow to be as fake as those who wear those stupid faded jeans. At any rate i would say the good lord has made you for who you are and when you do get older, all the babes will be all over you cuase of your young stud looks [ Thief's advice column | Ask Thief A Question ]

Jack Nicholson didn't become a success until he re-trained his voice. Before that, he spoke an octave higher than he does now. So it IS possible.
Relaxation is also important. Make a conscious effort to relax your chest, shoulders, and throat. You might even want to look up relaxation and breath control techniques online, or at the library.
But you should also know that you hear your voice differently than others do, due to resonance. And you're almost certainly being harder on yourself than anyone else is. Plus, you're still developing; your voice is likely to go through some more changes.

When you breathe, think about sending the breath down to the bottom of your lungs and out to the sides. Then when you speak think of sending the sound there too.
Sounds crazy I know, but it does work! Practise just by breathing in through the nose for 3, hold for 3 and then out through the mouth for 3 until u get it. You should feel something balloning out to the sides at the bottom of your ribs. Also if you place your hands on your ribs, middle fingers touching, they should part slightly when u breathe in if your doing it right.
