Question Posted Tuesday January 31 2006, 1:36 am

I wrote and performed music for twenty years. Had fun, played with great people. I'm now 43, don't want to perform or write anymore, but don't know what to do next. I'm still an intellectually curious type; read all the time (which is thoroughly enjoyable up to a point) and listen to underground rock, old jazz, newly discovered classical, all that, but I NEED focus. I sit around all the time, and still use mind alterers, and don't know what the hell to do with myself! Any suggestions? Please, no religious freaks. Let me rephrase: no religion-oriented suggestions whatsoever. That includes AA.
Otherwise, advise away!
-Jack

Okay... you wrote and performed music for a living right? For 20 years?

Um... you sit around and get high all day from the money you made from writing and performing music ... right?

That right there ( above ) that's awesome... being able to make a living from 'jammin' tunes - while using yur 'mind-altering' what have you.

I think you are intellectual... I don't doubt that.

I also think you were maybe just a little too high, maybe not thinking too correctly when you stated, " don't want to perform or write anymore." But your intellect prevailed thus stating one key phrase and I shall tell you clear as day what is that you need...

You stated, "I NEED focus."
I don't believe for one second ( neither do you ) that you want to give up music in any way shape or form. You need a little change. Might be the environment you're in, or maybe some people surrounding you - or not surrounding you. I suggest you take your 'mind altering' what have you and travel somewhere; anywhere - perhaps a magnificent mountiantop or the ocean. It's not that you lost interest in music buddy; all you need is that inspiration back. Maybe meeting someone new could fill in that blank spot again.
You just need that "something" to help you Focus again.

Reach for the sky...
Jump in the Ocean...
Climb that mountaintop...
Go find that special something u...
Get your inspiration and sing your Heart Out little byrd !!

Soar Like An Eagle ( lol ok ok u get the hint hehee )

Good Luck to You Friend...

Jack, not Jim? :)

You could always take up a new hobby by taking a class at a community college or something of the sort. They tend to offer random stuff that can be really fun.

Many people switch careers at some point in their life. It seems that your choice is whether you want to stay in this industry, or if you would prefer to move into entirely uncharted territory.

If you want to stay in music, there are many options. You could train to be a music teacher, begin working in production, start a business as an agent, become a club booker, work in a variety of areas for musicians, or do voluntary work (if you don't need the money).

If you think you'd like to try something completely different, a few sessions with a careers counsellor might be able to point you in the right direction. You could even re-enter education and earn a BA or MA - that'll give you focus!

It sounds as if you have many strong skills, and you should be able to apply them in an area you love - you just need to find it first.

Best of luck.

Whoa! Relax about religion. You don't sound like you'd be very open to ideas that you don't like so keep in mind that the only things I know about you are what you included in your question. If you don't like my suggestions add more information so I have a better idea of what you'd enjoy. My advice for you would be to teach. You could get involved in a school at your area by teaching band, choir, drama, or even music. Teaching doesn't necessarily mean teaching kids at a school if you don't like kids or something. There are lots of adults out there that want to learn how to play a musical instrument or take voice lessons. You could even put on a drama production or start a community band, choir, or orchestra. Since you like to read have you considered becoming an author? I can't really come up with much else so I hope that something I said interested you. Good luck!

Have you considered offering your services, either on a fee or volunteer basis, to teach young musicians? With twenty years of experience, I'm sure you have a lot to offer a learning musician. It would allow you to still be around music, but from a different perspective.
