First you need to remove unnecessary clatter. You can also repaint your room with light and cool colors. You should also consider having new set of thing like papers and other stuff.

posters, fun lights around the room, if you can repaint your room, get a fun mural on your wall, play more happy music (you wont feel as depressed), maybe redo your furniture, stencil your wall, get a fun new bedspread, rearrage your funiture, buy new accesories

Make it where it reflects your personality. If someone were to step into your room they would know some things about you.

If your favorite color is blue then paint the walls blue or put blue objects in your room.

If your favorite cartoon is Superman then put objects with superman on them in your room.

Put your own personal touch to it.

Awwwwwww, a question right up my ally..... I may be older than your Mom.... but I have one of the best bedrooms I've ever experienced!!!

First things first.... get rid of/donate/give away anything in that bedroom space that you don't use or don't need. If you haven't used it in the last year, you definitely don't need it!!!! I'm sure someone going to thriftstores will find your junk, their treasures!

Then clean.... wash the window(s), dust, vacuum the carpet, or mop the linoleum/hardwood floor..... clean is always good! Take down cobwebs.... and all wall hangings/picture/wall decorations and as you do I'd broom or sweep down the walls..... you have to have a real clean room to begin with.... I even repainted mine along with my whole house.

Then clean out you closet(s)..... again give stuff away, sort, organize.... I know where everything is in mine and can find it quickly and easily. The less time you have to spend searching for something, the more time you'll have to really enjoy your room.

Personally my bedroom is a very open space.... it's a 12 x 17' room.... with hardwood floors. I don't have a bed frame or headboard or foot. My mattresses sit on the floor in the middle of my room.... actually I have the bed facing true north and south, I understand magnetically it's very healthy to do this if you can.

I love growing things.... and now have to very large houseplants in the space... I use to have 5, but wanted more space so moved the others to other areas of my home. Besides they give me oxygen!

I'm lucky enough to have a skylight in my bedroom and I don't have curtains or drapes up, so I get lots and lots of sunlight in my room and even moonlight!

Now that the walls are clean and empty, you can begin redecorating.... choose those images/posters/framed prints/maps/photographs, etc that 'move you' and make you feel good about yourself and life! Use colors that you really really like and that make you feel really good. You want your space to be a haven, a place you can go to feel good and rejuvenate or recharge after a bad day or a tiring day. Your space should lift you up and invite you in.

Keep it clean and organized tho or it will loose it's value in your life!!! I have a room divider up in one corner where my cats' door is to cover up that from the rest of the bedroom. I have a small chair with an old floor rug in it, a cat often takes a nap there or I can sit in it if I wish. I have a basket for dirty clothes and my bedding/sheet sets are neatly folded and stored on the shelf in one side of my closets.

I suggest you decide what your fav colors are.... who your fav actresses/actors/tv shows/movies are and use some of those images... or if you like animals/rainbows/hearts like I do, look in old magazines etc for those images.... I use this white stuff you can get at a stationery store to put up my posters with.... it comes off the walls without leaving and stuff behind.... I don't use thumbtacks or nails or push pins, they always leave holes...

You might want to get a beaded curtain and hang it in the doorway of your bedroom, you can part it or pull it over to one side as needed with a simple hook attached to the door frame....

If your family has flowers in their yard or gardens.... cut flowers in season add a nice touch to the room and oftentimnes will smell really good! Oh, every once in a while I will take a spray bottle with a diluted mix of water and a little vinegar... and go in and spray my room to give it a 'fresh' smell....

Live plants are good and it will test your ability to grow things.... it feels really good as the plants grows and gives back to you and your special space.....

Hope this helps.... but clean, organized and open space I feel are key to a bedroom space that invites and recharges its occupant!

PS.... alive colors, images, and some hanging things would bring excitement and aliveness to a space..... make a dream catcher and hang it over your bed from the ceiling.... you can get free posters sometimes from an old movie theater or record shop????? Go to garage sales this spring or summer and look for 'fresh, alive, fun' stuff that someone else is practically giving away.... the possibilities are truly endless.... but keeping your room neat, clean, and keeping only what you're going to use in your space is 'key' to your success on this issue!
